This matter has been bottled up for almost half a year. My home always buffers watching shows at night, with WiFi signal maxed out, but speed tests only about 30Mbps, and I only got 500M broadband. At first, I blamed the router for being old and almost ordered a new one. But then I realized something was wrong—daytime speed tests could reach 480Mbps, but dropped at eight or nine in the evening. This didn't look like hardware failure, more like a traffic jam. After some research, I finally found out: channel interference. The neighbors all crowded into the same channel and fought over the routers. After manually selecting the channel, the evening peak speed returned to around 380Mbps. This article covers the self-inspection process and handmade selection methods.

clarify first: WiFi, like radios, is channel-split

router's WiFi doesn't just send whatever frequency it wants; the government has assigned it several fixed segments of spectrum, dividing them into individual "channels," much like the FM channels on a radio. 2. The 4G band has a total of 13 channels (domestically 1 to 13 are available), while the 5G band has even more channels. For communication between your phone and router, you need to choose a channel for communication.

problem lies in the 2.4G channel being a of "layering." 1、2、3…… The 13 may look like 13 channels, but each channel actually occupies 20MHz bandwidth, overlapping each other. The only ones that truly do not interfere with each other are 1, 6, and 11 (some say 1, 6, 11, 13, but some older devices don't support 13, so to be safe, it's still the top three). If you choose channel 3, you're stepping on both 1 and 6's territory, with both sides interfering with you. 5G is much easier, with channels basically not overlapping, and few people nearby use 5G, so for the same router, 5G is always more efficient than 2.4G.

I scanned with my phone, and just 2.4G scanned 23 signals: 9 on channel 1, 7 on channel 6, 5 on channel 11, and a few scattered on 3, 8, and 9—most of these neighbors were chosen by the router's "automatic channel." The automatic algorithm only depends on who has the shortest signal at the time, regardless of whether it interferes with others.

Step 1 self-check: install an app to clearly see who's crowding around you

Android phones, I recommend the "WiFi Magic Box" (the green version is fine, available in the app store). After installation, open it and select "Channel Evaluation" or "Interference Detection." It will list all your surrounding WiFi signals by channel, showing how strong each signal is and which channel it belongs on, making it clear at a glance. Apple phones don't have such handy tools. The system locks WiFi scanning permissions, so you can use a laptop instead: install "WirelessNetView" on Windows or directly type netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid in the command line. On Mac, just enable "Wireless Diagnostics" (hold Option and tap the WiFi icon in the top right corner). Inside, there is a "Wireless Diagnosis" icon in the top right corner of the "Wireless Diagnostics" button. The "Scan" window lets you see channel usage.

focus on two things: how many signal there are on each channel, and signal strength (usually negative, -40 is stronger than -70). Just set the standard for a simple comparison: if your home has no more than two neighbors on the channel you want to use with a stronger signal (the number closer to zero), then it's still usable; If you're facing a bunch of strong signals above -50, quickly change lanes.

I checked my own situation: the router automatically selected channel 6, and on channel 6, a neighbor's signal was -42, much stronger than my phone's -58. So my WiFi was suppressed as soon as I turned it on. This is the truth of "full signal but poor speed"—full bars mean you can "hear" the router; poor speed means your conversations are constantly interrupted, TCP retransmits every packet, and speed naturally drops.

2. How to choose 4G: Just choose 1, 6, or 11, and pick the emptiest one

2. 4G don't get too creative—just pick from 1, 6, and 11. The method is to look at the total load of each of these three channels in the scan results—not counting them, but counting the number of "signals stronger than yours." Choose whichever channel has the fewest neighbors stronger than yours. At that time, my home only had two weaker signals on channel 11, so I decisively switched over.

there are two pitfalls I'll step on for you. first pitfall: after changing the channel, don't choose 40MHz 2.4G bandwidth. Some routers default to "20/40 auto," but when the surrounding signal increases, the 40MHz actually clashes more fiercely, and the 40MHz bandwidth takes up half a frequency band at once, effectively offending all the neighbors. In environments with heavy interference, 20MHz is honestly used; the rate limit is a bit low (theoretical 144Mbps), but stability is more important than an overstatement. second pitfall: Don't trust that "automatic" will always . The auto channel only restarts when the router restarts; if a neighbor starts a new router at night, it won't be replaced accordingly. Once you decide on your hand, it's a permanent solution—unless one day you're too slow and can scan again.

How to choose

5G: Multiple channels, but first confirm which

your device supports.

5G channel numbers are arranged as 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 149, 153, 157, 161, and 165. The first segment (36 to 64) has stricter power limits, while the latter (149 to 165) has higher power and better wall penetration. For household use, generally choose from 149 to later. 5G is used by fewer people, so most of the time it's faster than 2.4G, but there are two details to know.

First, 52, 56, 60, and 64 are DFS channel and share frequency bands with weather radar. Before using the router, you need to "listen" to the radar for 10 minutes. Some phones (especially older iPhones) have poor DFS support and unstable connections. If you notice your phone frequently disconnects when connecting to 5G, check if it lands on these channels. Try switching to 149 and then try again. Second, 5G bandwidth: if both your router and phone support 160MHz (for example, a WiFi-6 AX series phone paired with an AX3000 or above router), 160MHz is indeed fast, but 160MHz requires several channels at once, and even with many neighbors in an apartment building, it can still be crowded. My last home was 80MHz channel 149, very stable.

there are also a few things others don't mention: 5G channel selection depends on the of the neighbor's "bandwidth mode." If a neighbor runs 160MHz, even if someone else isn't on 149MHz, 149MHz is still within their coverage range. Scan the app to see which channels neighbors are occupying (usually a segment of the range), avoiding areas covered by high bandwidth. At first, I chose 36MHz. It looked empty, but the person upstairs running 160MHz directly took up all 36MHz to 64Hz, switching to 157 for quiet.

after modification, you don't need to restart the router; the WiFi will disconnect briefly and reconnect as soon as you save, which is normal. After the modification, I immediately tested the speed and compared it so I had a clear idea. Additionally, users of Mesh networking should note: the channels of sub-routers generally follow the main router, so just change the main router without changing it one by one; However, if the backhaul between two Mesh devices uses 2.4G (not recommended), channel conflicts will become more pronounced, so try to use 5G or a network cable for the backhaul.

won't you be quick to fix it? Check again in this order

channel is the most common reason for slow WiFi, but it's not the only one. I rank them by the probability of falling into pitfalls, with channels first, and the rest passing one by one:

  • first check whether you're connecting to 2.4G or 5G—if your phone is far away, it will automatically drop to 2.4G. Many "slow" cases are actually due to connecting to the wrong band. In the router's backend device list, you can see which device is connected to
  • Then check if your broadband is slow during evening rush hours—plug in your computer and test directly. If the cable also drops, that's the provider's problem. Calling customer service is more effective than fiddling with the router. You can refer to my previous article about breaching bandwidth troubleshooting
  • router placement—put it in a weak current box, stick it against metal, or crouch in the corner of the TV cabinet—all are signal killers. Move them to a more open area first
  • the device is too old—phones only support WiFi 4 (802.11n), and no matter how fast the router is, it's only 72Mbps at best. Just look at the background connection speed

my order: first plug in the network cable to confirm the broadband itself is fine, then scan the channel and switch channels, and only consider switching devices. This time, switching channels got 350Mbps for free, not spending a cent. If you also encounter "full bars but slow," don't rush to order a new router; spend ten minutes scanning a channel, and you might save hundreds of yuan.
