What should I do if the router shows a red light and can't connect to the internet? Indicator light meaning + 6-step troubleshooting, the last trick many people don't know

Router red light troubleshooting flowchart: optical modem LOS light detection + 6-step troubleshooting + error code 691/678

was playing a game last Friday night when suddenly the 460 latency flashed red. When I turned my head, I saw the router indicator was red. The first reaction of the person at home was, "Restart the router and reset it," but I pressed it down — one press of the reset button, and all broadband account passwords were gone. Tonight, I couldn't get online anymore. After fiddling for about forty minutes, I thought this pitfall deserves an article, because router shows a red light, and the problem is probably not with the router . If you check in the right order, most people can fix it themselves.

First, understand the lights: red lights come in several types, each with completely different meanings

the lights on the router and optical modem are not decorative. Let me first go through several common types of red lights. Compare it to your own equipment:

__ HTML25__ optical path issues: fiber bending/breakage/carrier server room fault __ HTML36____ HTML47__ not lit up
which light which color and state what is the most likely issue
the light modem LOS light red flashing or always on
router system/system light always red firmware error or hardware failure, possibly a failed flash
router WAN/Internet light red or off connection to the external network is disconnected: overdue broadband bill, optical modem crash, loose network cable
router 2.4G/5G light wireless functions are turned off, or the router crashes as a whole

the most crucial step: first check the LOS light of the optical modem. My Telecom TEWA-750G is normally off with LOS off, and the registration light PON stays green. LOS flashing red means the optical signal is gone. At this point, no matter how much you try to use the router, it's useless—the problem lies with the optical path. LOS was off, PON was green, and only then was it time to check the router.

Here's a true story: once a friend called me for help, saying the router had a red light and no internet all night. When I arrived, I saw the optical modem (LOS) flashing red light wildly and ran along the fiber—when the cabinet moved, the pigtail bend was dented. Straighten the bend, and after thirty seconds, the light turns green. For this kind of thing, you can hire a master to come to your door, starting at fifty yuan.

my 6-step troubleshooting summary, follow the order and avoid jumping

this order is based on 'cost from low to high, probability from high to low.' Each step has clear criteria, and whenever a step breaks, it stops at that step.

Step 1: Check if the broadband is overdue. Don't laugh, this proportion is really high. Open the carrier app on your phone (Telecom's "Telecom Service Hall" or China Mobile's "China Mobile"), check the broadband section, or just dial 10000/10086/10010 and press 0 to turn to a manual. Pay any outstanding fees, and the machine will automatically resume within ten minutes. I helped my neighbor check three times, and twice it was for unpaid bills.

Step 2, check the light modem (LOS) light. red light flashing = optical path breakdown. First, check if the fiber has dead bends, door traps, or rat bites (don't doubt it, old neighborhoods really do have them). If you can't find any issues, just call for repairs. Their data center can remotely test light degradation and disconnection points. LOS The light is off, proceed to step 3.

Step 3: Restart the optical modem. the modem (modem) has been running for months without turning it off, and cache overflow can pretend to freeze, showing the router WAN light is red but the modem is completely green. Unplug the power supply to the modem, wait a minute before plugging it in (don't just press the switch, cut off the power). Wait until it starts up and check the router. I've encountered this twice myself, and after cutting the power and restarting, it was fine.

Step 4, check the wire on the router's WAN port. from the optical modem port 1 to the router's WAN port, there are many cases where the connector oxidizes and reconnects both ends and reconnects them. If you have spare parts, just replace it and try it. Conveniently confirm that the port is not inserted incorrectly—the WAN port should be connected to the optical modem and plugged into the LAN port. If the router is used as a switch, there definitely won't be any network. The Xiaomi router's WAN port is blue, which is different from the LAN port color—don't even look at it.

Step 5: Go to the router's backend to check the dial-up status. open 192.168.1.1 (Xiaomi uses 192.168.31.1), enter the management password, and find "Internet Settings" or "WAN Port Status". Look at three things:

  • IP Address received: All 0 means dialing failed
  • dialing error codes: 691 means incorrect broadband account password (password changed but not synced), 678 means line is blocked, 676 is busy
  • connection method: For optical modem, select "Dynamic IP" for routing mode, select "Broadband Dial-up" for bridge mode; if you select it incorrectly, you will never be able to dial in

see 691, don't panic—most likely your broadband password has changed, or the account you linked during application is mistaken. Calling the carrier's customer service can reset your broadband password. After resetting, just change it in the router's backend.

Step 6: Router itself. the previous one is all ruled out, leaving only this one. Only restart (press Power or Background Click Restart), do not press the reset button to . If rebooting still doesn't work, connect the computer's network cable directly to the optical modem port 1. Set up a broadband connection, enter your account and password to dial—if you can dial, it means there's a hardware or firmware issue; if not, the problem is still on the broadband side. Report the dialing error code to customer service—it's ten times more efficient than saying 'Can't get online.'

which red lights are caused by the router causing trouble

also have Guo Zhen in the router days, the ones I've seen mainly focus on three types:

First, System lights stay on red and all functions are disabled . My Redmi AX6S crashed once during flashing, and the light turned red. Ordinary users who haven't flashed their phones encounter this issue: they cut off the power for a minute and then reconnect it. Repeating this two or three times still doesn't work. Basically, the hardware will fail. If it's been in service for more than five years, just replace it directly—it's better to replace than to fix.

Second, overheat protection . Plug the router into the weak current box, stack an optical modem set-top box on top, and in summer, the temperature inside can reach 55 degrees, but the chip overheats and often pretends to freeze. Later, I made a cooling vent on the lid of the weak current box and spent over ten yuan on a USB mini fan to blow on. The number of disconnections was visibly low. If you touch the router's casing, it's hot to the touch—it's a suspicion.

third, firmware bug. Some older TP-Link firmware models run through BT downloads, causing memory leaks, WAN light red, reboot briefly and then relapse. Go to the official website and download the latest firmware for the corresponding hardware version; manually upgrading in the background can fix the issue. Pay attention to the hardware version on the label—Ver:X.X is the verification. If you flash the wrong firmware version, it will become bricked, and this is not just scaring people.

reset and reboot—the difference is just one word

to mention separately, because too many people confuse these two and end up throwing away the specs. restart either cut off power or click restart in the menu, keeping all configurations; reset reset press and hold the reset key for 5-10 seconds to restore the factory, clearing broadband accounts, WiFi passwords, and port forwarding.

under what circumstances is a reset really necessary? Forgot the router's background password, messed up configurations, and a bunch of things can't be recovered. Even at this point, you should first find your broadband account password before you act (you can check it on the installation slip or in the carrier's app). Otherwise, after resetting, you won't be able to connect to the internet or access the backend, leaving you confused at both ends.

don't panic if you accidentally press it. After resetting, the router will send a default WiFi without a password (usually the name is brand plus a string of models). After connecting, open 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.31.1, then follow the setup wizard to re-enter your broadband account password and rename the WiFi to encrypt. It takes ten minutes. The previously configured port forwarding and DHCP static binding had to be redone.

prepare these key information before requesting a repair

you confirm in step 2 or 6 that it's a line/optical path issue, you need to call customer service (Telecom 10000, China Mobile 10086, Unicom 10010. For broadband issues, select 'Broadband Repair' as prompted). Prepare all these before calling, explain everything clearly at once, and avoid back-and-forth calls:

  • the installation address and the contact number you left during installation (the technician used this to check the wiring),
  • the SN serial number or MAC address on the label on the back of the optical modem, and the LOID also
  • the modem status: LOS red flashing or off, PON green or not
  • error code for direct connection to optical modem dialing, There is the best

be honest, if you mention the phrase "optical modem LOS red light flashing" when reporting the repair, the technician basically knows what to bring, which is less than saying "The internet is dead, come take a look" and avoid unnecessary detours. For most optical path issues, they can arrange for them to arrive within two hours, and remelting the fibers takes only half an hour.

finally give a

based on the cases I've helped my own family and neighbors over the past two years: routers have red flags, with 70% of cases combined being due to bill arrears and fiber modem/wiring issues, while less than 10% of actual routers are faulty. So when you see a red light, take a deep breath and follow the steps 1→6: check the outstanding bill, check the optical modem for LOS, restart the optical modem, reconnect the network cable, check dial-up status in the background, and finally suspect the router. Hold the reset key without touching the entire process, and your broadband password and all configurations will be protected.
