Is the Xiaomi AX6000 still worth buying? My car has been used for five years and eight months, sold for 220 yuan last week, with specs and pitfalls explained all at once

Comparison of differences between Xiaomi AX6000 and Redmi AX6000: 2.5G network port, processor, flashing ecosystem, second-hand market

last month, after writing about the Redmi AX6000, three people in the comments asked: Is the Xiaomi AX6000 the same model? No, it's two completely different machines. coincidence, my family happens to have a Xiaomi AX6000. I bought it at the beginning of 2021 for 599 yuan, used it as the main router until 2024, then it sat in a drawer for two years. Last month, I sorted through the weak current box and found it, listed it on Xianyu for 220 yuan. While the memory is still warm, I'll give you a detailed look at this machine over five years ago.

first separate the two AX6000 units—the difference is more than just two words

these two machines were released a year apart, their positioning is different. The Xiaomi AX6000 was launched in January 2021 at 599 yuan; The Redmi AX6000 is a 2022 model, launching at 489 yuan. The AX6000 in the name refers to the wireless speed mode, but when you open it up and check the spec sheet, the difference is one by one:

comparison Xiaomi AX6000 (2021) Redmi AX6000 (2022)

second-hand market price around 200 yuan refreshers are the bottom line, and it's clearly more expensive

interesting thing here: the Redmi version, which came a year later, actually has a stronger CPU—quad-core at 2.0GHz versus dual-core at 1.0GHz. But the Xiaomi version's 2.5G port is not provided by the Redmi version. Xiaomi's product line is just that mysterious: flagship phones get the port, cost-performance phones get the chip. Before buying a used one, think carefully about which one you want. the Redmi version, I wrote about the actual test , so here I'm mainly talking about the Xiaomi version.

this device was selling for two main points back then: a 2.5G port and a 4K QAM

Back in

2021, routers with 2.5G ports were basically dominated by ASUS and Netpiece, with any unit costing over a thousand. The Xiaomi AX6000 was priced at 599 yuan for its 2.5G port, making it the cheapest 2.5G WiFi 6 router at the time. I bought it for this reason. This port WAN and LAN are adaptive; plugging the optical modem into a 2.5G WAN works too, or when plugging into a NAS to use as a 2.5G LAN.

4K QAM is another launch selling point. With a standard 1024 QAM, a 2x2 plus 160MHz bandwidth phone negotiates at 2402M, and switching to 4K QAM can reach 2882M—about 20% faster. It sounds nice, but there's a premise that people often overlook: phones must support 4K QAM too. Xiaomi 11 and later flagship generations will accept it, but the elderly phones, iPhones, and most Android phones at home won't accept it, and the negotiation still uses 2402M. My car has been in service for five years, and I can count the number of times I've actually used 4K QAM.

a quick calculation: the 2.4G 574M plus 5G 4804M equals 5378M. The official AX6000 is rated as a 6000-level 4K QAM full-power caliber. Mathematically, there's no fault; it's just that you need a fully supported phone to get the results. Just look at the numbers on paper, don't take them too seriously.

that 2.5G port has actually been empty at my home for a full three years. In 2021, my home had gigabit broadband, and the modem just came with a gigabit port. When plugged in, the 2.5G WAN still ran 940Mbps, basically giving it away. It wasn't until 2024, when my home NAS got a 2.5G network card, that this eloquence finally came into play. The night before I bought it, I deliberately plugged the NAS back into it and ran a night of copying. The SMB stayed stable around 280Mbps, basically the same level as the later test on the BE7000—the port is good, but it was just untimely. By the time I finally had a 2.5G device at home, it had already been replaced by AX3000T and stuffed into a drawer.

as for 5G 4x4 antennas, phones basically use 2x2 antennas, negotiate speed to exploit weaknesses, while 4x4 routers connect 2x2 phones and still block 2402. The real home of 4x4 is multi-device concurrent use, with several phones running simultaneously and four streams split up without crowding into a single line. If you have fifty or sixty devices at home, this spec is the only way to feel the difference.

Five years of

512MB memory: 62 devices steadily driving

what I'm most satisfied with about this machine is actually its 512MB memory. I've had 62 devices at home connected to it, and during peak hours, the backend only uses just over 50% of memory, far from the red line from the clock. Later, the AX3000T I replaced was 256MB of RAM. Similarly, 62 devices peaked at 62%. On paper, it was tight, but in reality, it didn't drop the ball. But the margin was definitely enough for the Xiaomi AX6000. mentioned in that article about digital devices, that when it comes to the number of devices, both memory and firmware are important. 512MB is a solid source of confidence.

Why was it replaced in the fall of

2024? I'm not afraid of being laughed at—it's not that it's broken, it's that I'm just itching to get my hands on it. AX3000T it was 129 yuan back then, with all the new firmware and features, so I replaced it easily. AX3000T I've used it for two years, the Xiaomi AX6000 drawer has been lying around for two years. Do you have to say you regret it? Not to mention AX3000T standby is more power-efficient. But there's one thing to credit for it: five years and eight months, the number of restarts is countable on one hand, and I've never had a single major problem that required repairing bricks.

volume is its flip side. It used the AX3600 mold set, a large piece with seven antennas, weighing about one and a half jin, and back then, it looked like a decorative piece on the TV cabinet. On summer afternoons without air conditioning in the living room, the casing felt warm but not too hot to touch, around 52 degrees Celsius, much more respectable than the AC2100 with a weak current box installed later. Even this sturdy build made it hard to place in place. It occupied a block of weak current boxes vertically, pressed other equipment horizontally, and eventually moved it to the top of the study bookshelf to enjoy natural breeze for two years.

it doesn't have a USB port, even I missed it

here, I need to correct a mistake I made myself. In my previous post about printers, I said I tried plugging the AX6000's USB port into the HP P1106 but nothing happened—in that article, I installed the USB 3.0 port from the Xiaomi AX9000 into the AX6000's head. this time, while writing this article, I flipped through the specs page and found that the AX6000 doesn't have a USB port at all—just a power port, four network ports, and a reset port on the back of the body. the exact words of the ACwifi teardown article back then were to cut it if possible, saving you the hassle.

so if you search online for "Xiaomi AX6000 to connect to a portable hard drive" or "AX6000 printer setup," the tutorials that come up will show that most machines are AX9000 or other models. Following these steps is like plugging in a machine without ports. the conclusion from the printer article remains unchanged, Xiaomi's official firmware never included print server functionality; really want to use the router's USB port as a shared drive, check out that listing models that actually have ports. If you're buying second-hand, remember this: if the seller says the AX6000 can plug in a USB drive, just turn around and leave.

Observations on

220 Strike: What do the people who buy them want

was listed on Xianyu, seven or eight people came to ask in one night, and the three most frequently asked questions perfectly revealed the second-hand value of this machine. The first question: "Do you need 2.5G?" A friend of mine just upgraded their NAS to 2.5G and bought it for that port. 2.5G intranet tests show it can run around 290Mbps . Two hundred yuan to get one port is much cheaper than replacing the whole device. The second question is, "Is the firmware up to date?" Xiaomi's official firmware has long been under long-tail maintenance, rarely running twice a year, so they care about the cautiousness of security patches. The third question was, "Can you flash the phone?" I said no, and they just turned around and left—this is the root cause of the inverted price of the two AX6000 models: the Redmi version has the OpenWrt ecosystem supporting the price, while the Xiaomi version has no Qualcomm chips being served, instead falling back to pure hardware prices.

is clearer than comparing it to a new phone. For just 150 to 60 yuan, you can get the BE3600 with WiFi 7, gigabit broadband, and a brand new phone from the past two years—just blindly choose a new phone. The sweet spot for used Xiaomi AX6000s is quite narrow: I have 2.5G devices to feed, dozens of devices, and a WiFi 6 phone. At 200 yuan, it's still worth it. If you don't touch any of the three types of needs, don't pay just for the word 'flagship'—a flagship from five years ago is now a Taichung terminal device.

your situation I recommend
have a 2.5G NAS or desktop to buy it, which is worth half the fare
old WiFi 6 50 to 60 devices, 512MB of stable memory
phones have been upgraded, and I've upgraded to WiFi7 BEseries
want to flash and mess around don't go check out the Redmi version or AX6S
100Mbps broadband anyone would waste buying it

the second-hand inspector also mentioned: let the seller take a screenshot of the backend system status page to see if the runtime matches the "five-year personal use" claim; Check the back case to see if the SN sticker is intact. You can check how long the warranty is left on Xiaomi's official website; The power supply must be the original 12V round connector; this misleading power supply is the biggest hidden problem of second-hand routers. If all three are clean, a 200-yuan price is fair.

order of transactions is also clear: first unbind the machine from Mijia, then restore it to the factory, and finally ship. If the order is reversed, buyers can't tie the machine, and after-sales service will be annoying. This process is about the same as when selling a second-hand router, and the details in the article about removing the mesh. On the day I sold my five-year-old phone, I was a bit reluctant, but thinking about the AX3600 still lying in my drawer, I thought, fine, I'll explain it next time.
