my home is a two-story duplex. The router is always in the living room on the first floor, and the WiFi in the master bedroom on the second floor is two blocks all year round. I just make do with watching videos, but every night during video conferences, my face gets pixelated. I first bought a signal amplifier, but it wasn't very useful; Later, I tried wireless relay, and the speed was cut in half. In the end, I gritted my teeth and bought a Redmi AX3000 and combined it with the AX6S at home to build a mesh setup. After a weekend of toggling around, I finally got it right. There were quite a few pitfalls along the way: the app's one-click networking failed at all times, sub-routers plugged into the wrong port, and signals that were fully loaded but still laggy. This article clearly states the correct order; following it can save you more than half the time.

to be clear: Mesh and relay are not the same thing

At first, I thought Mesh was just a more advanced wireless repeater, but after buying it, I realized they're completely different.

wireless relay works by "taking one swipe and forwarding another." Sub-devices receive signals from the main router and forward them to the phone, naturally halving the speed. Moreover, the two devices have different names for WiFi and the phone won't switch automatically; you have to manually switch between upstairs and downstairs. Mesh is different; the whole house has only one WiFi name. The two routers negotiate between themselves who connects to the phone and how to transfer data. When you walk from the first floor to the second floor holding your phone, the connection switches seamlessly in the background. Speed is also guaranteed, especially for wired backhaul Mesh, where the speed of sub-routers is basically uncompromised.

Xiaomi Mesh has another practical feature: different models can be mixed . I use the AX6S as the main router, and the Redmi AX3000 as the main router, so I can add a Xiaomi AX3000T without needing the same model. But here's a premise—try not to mix with an old machine. I tried building an old AX3600 from 2018; it worked but roaming switches were a bit slow. Older machines are better moved to serve as APs for a separate room, more on that later.

Step One: One-click networking with the app—high failure rate but worth trying

Xiaomi's official approach is one-click networking via the Mijia app, which is the easiest and can be done in five minutes if successful. Operation sequence: Power on the sub-router first, do not plug in the network cable for now; Connect your phone to the main router's WiFi; Open the Mijia app, go to the main router's device page, find "Mesh Networking" or "Add Sub-router," then click Next as prompted, waiting for the two machines to pair on their own. The sign of successful pairing is that the sub-router indicator lights up blue and stays on, and the Mijia sub-router appears in the main router's topology diagram.

I succeeded the first time, but when I tried four times to help a friend, it failed and got stuck spinning at 'connecting sub-router.' After some exploration, there were three reasons for failure: First, the two machines were too far apart, so wireless pairing required them to reach each other first. The correct approach was to first pair the sub-router in the same room as the main router, then move it back to the second-floor , reboot the sub-router once after moving, and the mesh relationship would still remain; Second, the main router's firmware is too old. Go to 192.168.31.1 or go to Mijia and upgrade both to the latest firmware before rebuilding; Third, if your phone is connected to 5G WiFi but the sub-router only recognizes 2.4G paired broadcasts, switch your phone to the main router's 2.4G network and try again.

one-click networking worked, congratulations! Let's skip to step three and check the placement. If it doesn't work, don't stubbornly stick with it. Take the second step, wired networking, which is actually more stable.

Step 2: Wired backhaul, one network cable solves 90% of the problems

wireless backhaul is a sub-router connected to the main router via WiFi, with two machines separated by a floor, so the backhaul link itself is already compromised. Wired backhaul uses a network cable to connect two devices, and the backhaul uses a network cable, which is fast and stable. This is the difference between the ceiling and the floor of the Mesh effect. When I renovated the second floor, I left network cables running from the low-voltage box on the first floor to the bedroom on the second floor. After setting up the wired return route, the second floor's speed test could run the broadband full, whereas before wireless return trips were only about 60-70%.

There's a pitfall in

wiring I've encountered: the network cable plug is the router's WAN port, not the LAN port. The correct topology is for the cable from the optical modem to connect to the main router's WAN port, the main router outgoing any LAN port, passing through the wall to the second floor, and connecting to the sub-router's WAN port. The first time I casually plugged into the subrouter's LAN port, the subrouter treated itself as a dedicated router, turning the second floor into a new network segment, and the tasks downloaded on my phone before leaving would disconnect as soon as I reached the second floor. Plug back into the WAN port, restart the sub-route, and Mesh will automatically recognize it as a wired backhaul. The connection between the two machines on the Mijia topology will change from a wireless icon to a network cable logo.

if your home doesn't have pre-installed network cables, don't rush to use wireless backhaul. You can first check if there are other options: power modem (using power cables to plug into sockets from the same distribution box is reliable), single-wire multiplexing (if you have only one cable but want to run both IPTV and broadband, you can use VLAN; I wrote about this in detail in the of IPTV single-wire multiplexing). If not, return the wireless backhaul, then place the sub-router at the stairwell, where the two machines have the least wall separating the two machines, not two load-bearing walls.

Step 3: Place the sub-router—don't blindly believe in 'centering'

people online say that sub-routers should be placed at the center of the whole house, but in my own tests, they don't work for two-story structures. the two-story setup, the sub-router is placed near the stairwell because the staircase is the channel with the least signal loss between the upper and lower floors. The sub-router is placed close to the stairwell, which not only supports second-floor rooms but also reduces signal loss when returning through the floor. I started by placing the sub-router in the master bedroom on the second floor—the most dead-end signal spot. But the return link between the sub-router and the main router was only two bars. The second-floor WiFi looked full, but the exit was blocked on the return route—it was all for nothing.

a few useful practical details: don't put the sub-router in a drawer or place it on the ground, stand the antenna upright (if it's an external antenna), and leave a gap at the bottom for cooling; Stay at least two meters away from microwave ovens or Bluetooth speakers; On the main router device page in the Mijia app, there's a 'Signal Detection' section that lets you see the current backhaul signal strength of the sub-route. , the backhaul signal must be kept at least two bars ; if it drops to one bar, you have to move the position. After moving it, wait ten minutes to check; Mesh's link evaluation is not real-time.

signal is full but laggy: most likely because there was no switching, not signal

After

set up the network for a week, I noticed something strange: on the second floor, holding a phone, the WiFi icon was full, and the video kept spinning. Later, I realized that the signal was full from the main router on the first floor—the phone was connected to the main router and hadn't switched to the sub-router a meter away.

the root of this is roaming stickiness: the phone thinks the signal is still acceptable and doesn't switch proactively. Xiaomi has a toggle in the background. Go to 192.168.31.1, go to Advanced Settings and find "Mesh Networking" or "Roaming Settings" to increase roaming sensitivity (some versions call it "Fast Roaming" or 802.11k/v switch). This makes switching much more actively. The path to the Mijia app is the main router device page→ Wi-Fi settings→ roaming settings. After opening it, I held my phone and went up and down stairs. The switching usually took a second or two, and the video kept streaming.

there's also a reverse pitfall: the sub-router disconnects every few minutes, and the indicator light turns yellow and then blue. I've encountered this before, and eventually found that the socket installed for the sub-router had poor contact; when the voltage fluctuated, it would restart. After networking, the sub-router accounts for half the house. power supply, don't compromise —plug it directly into the wall socket, don't use inferior power strips.

Mesh setting up well doesn't mean it's done. I finished with this checklist, and both times I networked (at my own home and at a friend's) passed the test on the first try.
