the WiFi signal at home is poor, most people's first reaction is, "The router is dead, replace it." I used to think the same way, until last month, in order to find the best signal location, I moved my TP-LINK xdr3066 to five locations and tested signal strength one by one with my phone—the conclusion: same router, the difference in signal strength between right and wrong is 12 dB, which is better than replacing a new router. This article lists all five locations and data I tested myself. Check if your own router is also placed incorrectly.

clarify first: how did you personally destroy the WiFi signal

WiFi it was a radio wave, with frequencies of 2.4G or 5G. It has a physical property: the higher the frequency, the more it fears obstruction and distance. A 5G band passes through a load-bearing wall, cutting the signal in half; After passing through two walls, there was basically only one slot left.

  • Metal : Metal doors in weak current boxes, refrigerator side panels, security doors—for WiFi, they're like mirrors—signals bounce back and can't get through.
  • water : human body, fish tank, humidifier. Water absorbs electromagnetic waves as a physical law, and 2.4G is especially sensitive to water. If you have a large fish tank at home, don't place the router on either side of the wall.
  • dense electrical : TV, microwave oven, set-top box, which both block and transmit interference. When the microwave is running, 2.4G basically fails—that's true.

So poor signal isn't necessarily the router's fault; it's very likely you've locked it in a 'signal prison.' The first spot in my home is the hardest-hit area; let's go through them one by one.

Location 1: Weak Current Box—My Biggest Regret Plan

During renovation, workers stuffed the router into the weak current box, saying, 'This is neat.' The signal is really neat, but the signal is really bad. Once the iron door of the weak current box closes, it's like putting a metal cover over the router, causing a significant drop in WiFi signal before it reaches the whole house. I tested it with my phone in the living room. Compared to taking the router out and placing it on top of the weak current box, the signal was about 8 dB weaker, and in the bedroom, it dropped to -75dBm or lower, while watching videos spinning in circles.

if your home has this layout, here are two ways to change it:

  • only keep the optical modem inside the weak current box, move out the router, and lead the network cable from the weak current box to the living room TV cabinet or bookshelf — assuming the cable was left during renovation; if not, try the second method.
  • router left in the weak current box as the 'wired master router,' turn off its WiFi, and place a sub-router or Mesh node in the living room for wired backhaul. The cost is a bit higher, but you don't have to break the wall.

I was too lazy to rewire, so I just moved the router out and placed it on the second shelf in the living room. That step brought back more than half the signal.

Locations 2 and 3: inside the TV cabinet, on top of the refrigerator, but none worked

After moving to the living room, I first stuffed it into the TV cabinet, squeezing it together with the set-top box and TV stick. But back then, every night I watched live streams, which would lag. Later, I realized: the TV cabinet was a semi-enclosed wooden compartment, with the router nested inside, and a 55-inch TV standing in front—a large metal backing panel on the back of the TV just blocked the direction toward the sofa. I took the router out of the cabinet and placed it on top. The sofa signal went from -62dBm to -55dBm—an immediate effect.

tried the top of the fridge too. The refrigerator looks empty on top, but it's actually a big iron cabinet, and when the compressor starts, there's electromagnetic interference. In actual tests, at this point above the fridge, the signal on the other end of the living room is 4 dB worse than on the bookshelf. Also, in summer, the refrigerator ceiling becomes damp, and electronic devices left on top for a long time can cause circuit board issues, so it's not recommended.

Location 4: Where is the center of the entire house? Remember the principle of a center point plus one meter of height

After moving three times, I carefully calculated my layout: three bedrooms and one living room. The router was originally placed in the living room by the balcony, and the furthest bedroom is separated by a full diagonal. WiFi is sent outward from the router's center. If you put it in a corner of your house, you're sending half the signal to your neighbor's house and hallway.

the correct approach is simple: find the geometric center of the floor plan for the whole house. Place the router near this point, 1 meter to 1.5 meters high, and don't touch the ground or the ceiling .

my final spot was the second shelf between the living room and dining hallway, about 1.2 meters above the ground, right near the center of the whole house, with no major appliances nearby. This position scored highest among the five points I tried: the farthest bedroom went from -78dBm to -66dBm, an increase of 12 dB; The bathroom went from 'basically no signal' to being able to watch short videos. There are also some considerations for the height from 1 meter to 1.5 meters—placed close to the ground, covered by furniture; Place it against the roof, or block the ceiling or lighting. Most antennas are designed for the strongest horizontal signal; placing them too high or too low is wasteful.

antenna angles also have a saying: don't keep them all vertical

I used to think a fully vertical antenna was the only way to be professional, but after testing with two phones, I figured it out: one in the living room, the other one directly beneath the router (my home is a duplex). When the antenna is fully vertical, the phone directly below has a weaker signal; I placed one of the antennas flat (pointing horizontally toward the ceiling), and the signal downstairs immediately improved.

principle In short: the direction the antenna points to, the more it emits more signals; the antenna points to the "overhead" and "underfoot" areas signal blind spots. So:

  • single-floor layout, router antennas are all facing a flat surface: the antenna is vertical, the signal spreads horizontally, which is sufficient.
  • duplex or upper and lower layers should be covered: one vertical and one horizontal, covering both layers.

multi-antenna router, don't break a few antennas into fan shapes; that only looks nice; a vertical and horizontal setup is more practical.

the final measured data, a table

shows three fixed test points at home: the same router, the same time point (8:30 PM, avoiding peak usage differences), and the same phone. The approximate values I measured:

to clarify, dBm is negative; the closer the number is to zero, the stronger the signal. -51 and -63 differ by 12 dB, which translates to a signal strength difference of more than ten times. The visual experience is the difference between instantly turning on video and spinning in circles. This method doesn't require professional equipment. sum up the order: don't spend money right away: first turn off the iron door of the weak current box, take the router out of the cabinet or next to the metal; Then, compare it to the floor plan to find the center of the entire house and raise it to about 1.2 meters high; Finally, adjust the antenna: flat-layer full vertical and duplex one vertical and one horizontal.
