what exactly is stored in the configuration file
you can think of it as a "snapshot" of the entire router. After downloading, it's just a single file, tens of KB, and all the settings are packaged inside:

three, before the major changes. modifying bridges, changing network segments, or fiddling with third-party firmware—if you're not satisfied with these operations and want to go back, if you have backups, you go back the original way; if not, you manually restore them by memory—who can remember the network segment, VLAN, and channel settings?
fourth, the family bought a second router of the same model. For example, if two AX3000T networks and the main router settings are copied to the second router as is, loading configuration files is much faster than manually copying each item one by one. But there's a big pit on this road, I'll explain below.

don't just leave the downloaded bin files in the download folder—reinstall the system and they're gone. My approach is to save one copy to the cloud drive, then send another to my own email—insurance on both ends. Easily change the file name to "Model + Date," like "AX3000T-20260914.bin," and after half a year, you can still know which machine's condition and which day.
recovery only takes three steps, but the three prerequisites should be addressed first
The recovery process itself is not technical: enter the same page, click "Browse," select the bin file, click Load, the router will automatically restart, and that's it. There are three real premises that can lead to failure:
premise one, same model. The official TP-LINK FAQ clearly states that backup files can only be used for recovery on routers of the same model. If your router is switched to a different model, old backups won't be inserted. Even if the interface asks you to select files, loading them will cause various discomforts. Therefore, when upgrading to a new router, the correct way to use the old backup is to "open and copy the settings items directly," not load them directly.
prerequisite two: the firmware version shouldn't differ too much. files backed up from the old firmware era, restoring them to firmware with major updates can cause minor settings to be mismatched or the router repeatedly restarting and failing to start. After upgrading the firmware, remember to back up a new copy overwriting the old one—don't let the backup stop forever from last year. prerequisite three, don't make the files too old. configuration is a snapshot, and the restored world returns to the backup day. If you changed your WiFi password within three months, loading an old backup will revert to the old password and cause all family devices to disconnect—don't worry, it's not broken. You can still connect with the old password, then manually change the password back. Changing the password itself only takes a few minutes.
there's another pitfall I've personally stepped into: when using two routers of the same model, don't load the main router's configuration directly into the second router in the network. Two devices loaded with the same configuration have identical LAN IPs, but if connected to the same network, IP conflicts occur, causing mesh networking to fall apart. If you want to reuse the configuration on the second unit, after loading, manually change the LAN port IP and operating mode, then connect back to the network.

think from another angle: a file contains broadband passwords, WiFi passwords, management passwords, and port forwarding rules—this is your network password book. Some brands use encryption, some use weak codes, and there are even ready-made decryption tools available online. So there are three red lines:
don't post in family group chats, don't share public cloud drive links, and when selling a second-hand router, don't casually send the configuration files to buyers to make it easier for them to set up. The first two are to prevent strangers, and the last is to prevent "acquaintances"—when the buyer gets your profile, your previous broadband account and WiFi password are all inside. The correct way to sell used is to restore the factory and delete the configuration files yourself.

Xiaomi readers who find this and don't scold me—it really doesn't exist: the Mi Home app and the 192.168.31.1 web backend, no "export configuration file" option after searching system settings. On Xiaomi's promotional page, "backup" refers to backing up photos from your phone to the hard drive mounted on the router.
