three ways to recognize people: don't treat your own equipment like a thief

Out of about ten devices on the list, which one is the thief? I have three tricks, ranked by convenience:

first trick is to match the name and time. device name is the biggest distraction—the name displayed on Mercury is half the phone model and half garbled, and something like "android-7f" is impossible to tell who it is. Don't worry about the name—look at "online duration" and "connection time": your device's online routine matches your lifestyle (disconnects in the morning, comes back online at night). People who use the internet often do it all day or stay active during times when no one is working. The HUAWEI I caught was exactly like this—it was online for 7 days without interruption, while no one in my family used a Huawei phone at all.

second trick: check the top six MAC vendors. the first six digits of each device's MAC address represent the manufacturer, search for "MAC OUI lookup"; if the manufacturer matches the device name, it is your own brand. On the WiFi detail page, you can see your MAC and check each one carefully. If it doesn't match, you're the suspect.

third trick: the elimination method. turn off the WiFi of every device at home: turn off WiFi on your phone, unplug the cable from your TV—anyone who doesn't disappear from the list is considered an outsider. This trick is the dumbest but also the most accurate, especially when all the device names at home are a bunch of garbled characters. Random MAC Pitfall: After kicking the second day, another 'new device' appears

After kicking, another unfamiliar device appears in the list, with a different name and MAC than yesterday's—don't rush to doubt your life, it's probably still the same phone. iPhones and recent Android phones have "private addresses" (random MACs) enabled by default, generating a fake MAC for every WiFi connection, and some systems even replace them regularly. random MAC has a downside: if you disable a family member's phone, it automatically reconnects with a new MAC. You think you're kicking a thief, but you're actually kicking your own child. So ban the first three skills to recognize people—don't skip a single step.

lazy person cure: Owner Network Protection Whitelist

If your home only has a few devices for years, there's a one-time toggle: advanced settings→ internet controls→ Owner Network Protection . Add your device's MAC to the whitelist; all devices outside the list can connect to WiFi but cannot access the internet. Even if the internet smuggler's password was correct, it was useless—it was just cut off at the door.
