How to change the encryption method of Telecom optical modem WiFi? If you select the wrong drop-down box, your whole family will be disconnected from the Internet.

How to change the encryption method of Telecom optical modem WiFi: Separate settings for 2.4G and 5G, selection of WPA2 and hybrid modes, and troubleshooting procedures for old devices not being able to connect.

Last month, the old Huawei HS8145V5 Android box at my mother's house suddenly couldn't connect to WiFi. My phone and computer were all normal, but the box I used to watch TV series kept spinning in circles. At first I thought I entered the password incorrectly. 192.168.2.1 When I opened the background, I saw that the encryption method in the WiFi security column was stopped at "WPA/WPA2 Mixed". Change the drop-down box from Mixed to WPA2-PSK, then nail the encryption algorithm to AES, save and restart, and the box will be connected on the spot.

Later, I tried it on another ZTE F7015T at home, and found that the menus on the Telecom Optical Mode looked different, but the overturning points were similar.: The default value of the encryption method drop-down box is not for old devices. If you try to save trouble and leave it untouched, the old devices may collectively pretend to be dead one night.

First, distinguish between "encryption method" and "WiFi password", don't change the wrong box

The two of them were very close to each other backstage at optical modem, and their names were both related to safety. I almost corrected my mistake for the first time. The WiFi password is the one entered when the mobile phone is connected to the Internet. After changing it, the password must be re-entered for all devices in the family. ; The encryption method is the rule used during the handshake, and it controls "whether the old device recognizes this network." The two can be moved separately, they are not the same thing.

Common encryption mode options for telecom optical modems. I checked several machines from Huawei, ZTE, and Tianyi, and these are roughly the options.:

Options Suitable for whom Notice
WPA/WPA2 mixed Very old equipment, such as network cards and old TV boxes from around 2010 The compatibility is the best, but some mobile phones will disconnect when connected.
WPA2-PSK Most mobile phones, computers, and smart devices after 2014 The most stable, my family’s default answer
WPA2/WPA3 mixed If you want to use WPA3 on your new phone, your old device must be compatible Not every telecom optical modem has this feature
WPA3 All are new devices after 2019 Old cameras and old boxes can hardly be connected.

If you only see the "WPA" option in the drop-down box, then this optical modem is too old. Don't bother with it yet. As long as it can access the Internet, it is more cost-effective to replace it with a new optical modem than to spend time on this page. Many telecom optical modems are given by operators, and replacing them for free is often more worry-free than buying a second-hand one.

I've suffered from this. Use your mobile phone to connect to the modem WiFi and go into the background to change the encryption method. The moment you click save, the WiFi is disconnected, the phone disconnects by itself, and the page is stuck in half. I thought it was changed. In fact, the parameters have been written in the background, but your operating terminal is out of network.

The most stable way is to find a network cable, plug the computer into the LAN1 port of the optical modem, and then enter 192.168.2.1 . If you only have a mobile phone at hand, you can still log in, but it is normal for you to be disconnected after making changes. Just wait for ten seconds to reconnect. I have written the complete steps for mobile phone login before. If you are stuck in the address bar and cannot open it, read it first. 192.168.2.1 Mobile phone login article , thinner than here.

Log in to your account and use up the sticker on the back of the cat first. useradmin and password. Don't look for the telecomadmin super password as soon as you get started. Changing the WiFi encryption method from an ordinary account is enough for most machines. If it really can’t be changed, I will talk about the other two ways later.

This is how I modified Huawei HS8145V5

The one my mom has is Huawei HS8145V5, backstage entrance 192.168.2.1 , after logging in, first switch to "Network" at the top, then go to "WLAN Settings" or "WiFi Settings", where you can see two tabs, 2.4G and 5G.

The two frequency bands should be viewed separately. On the 2.4G page, scroll to "Security Settings" and change the security mode to WPA2-PSK , encryption algorithm selection AES , don't select TKIP, it is a legacy of the last century, and the speed will drop to around 54Mbps after selecting it. Change the 5G page as well, and the password can be set to be the same, making it easier for the phone to switch on its own.

If the firmware of this optical modem is relatively new, "WPA2/WPA3 Mixed" may appear in the 5G drop-down box. If you have a new mobile phone at home after 2019, you can choose this. The new device will use WPA3, and the old device will automatically fall back to WPA2. But the firmware of my mother's machine didn't have this option, so I just stuck to WPA2-PSK, and it hasn't changed again after three months of use.

I have stepped on this pit three times. The first time was with the Android box in 2018. It was disconnected repeatedly when it was stopped at WPA/WPA2 Mix. After changing to WPA2-PSK, it was as stable as wired. ; The second time is an old camera from a relative’s house. It only recognizes WPA2-PSK plus AES. If I change the mixed mode, it will spin in the app. ; The third time was an old laptop from 2015. Both 2.4G and 5G had to be parked in WPA2-PSK to shake hands. The three device models are different, but the root causes are all in the same drop-down box.

The entrance of ZTE F7015T is hidden on another floor

I don’t use the ZTE F7015T at home as the main router. The optical modem WiFi is usually turned off, but in order to write this article, I turned it on again and looked through it. Its path is 192.168.2.1 → 「"Network" → "WLAN" → "WiFi Advanced Settings" or "Wireless Settings", which is one more layer than Huawei's. If you don't look carefully, you will think it is not there.

ZTE's page is accustomed to displaying "Safe Mode" and "Encryption Method" separately. Some firmwares directly give you two options: "WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK" and "WPA2-PSK", but there is no WPA3. select WPA2-PSK Just adding AES is enough, just like Huawei.

No-name telecom cats such as Tianyi, Youhua, and Nokia Bell have more confusing menu levels, but if you look closely for the three words "wireless", "WLAN" and "WiFi security", there will always be a page with encryption methods hidden. Don’t worry if you can’t find it after searching twice, just look first 192.168.2.1 What is the use of a row of menus in the background? In that article, match the menu names first, it will be faster than blindly.

The change is not the end: All equipment in the house needs to be reconnected

After the encryption method is changed, the optical modem wireless module will restart for more than ten seconds. At this time, the devices at home will basically need to be reconnected. Just re-select the network and enter the password on your mobile phone and computer. ; Devices without screens such as cameras, sweepers, and speakers are the most troublesome. Some require entering the App to delete the device and re-configure the network.

I finished the modification at my mother's house last time. One of the two surveillance cameras was configured in ten minutes, but the other could not be connected. Later I found out that it only recognized 2.4G, and I was busy changing the 5G. I didn't check the encryption method of 2.4G after I changed it. so remember: Both 2.4G and 5G frequency bands need to be passed through , it’s not just a matter of changing it. The pitfalls of frequency band setting and smart devices only recognizing 2.4G, I broke it down and wrote it in Tianyi gateway 2.4G and 5G are set up separately Inside.

Another thing that is easily overlooked: After changing the encryption method, although the password has not changed, if the device fails to re-handshake, it will repeatedly display "Incorrect password". It looks like the password is lost, but it is not. Don't rush to change the password yet. Forget the device from the network and reconnect it, and it will probably work.

Ordinary accounts cannot be changed, there are two other ways

The useradmin permissions of some telecom optical modems have been severely cut off. You can see WiFi when entering, but the "safe mode" is grayed out, and there is no response after saving. At this time, try changing the mobile app first.: Enter the router/WiFi settings in Telecom's "Xiaoyi Butler". Some optical modems can change the encryption method and password. The location is more straightforward than the web version. App The details of this road are in What is the use of Xiaoyi Guanjia App? I’ve written about it before, so I won’t repeat it here.

The app can’t be changed either, so it’s my turn to find the super password. But to be honest, the super passwords of telecom optical modems are often dynamic now. Today's telecomadmin may change tomorrow. Unless you want to change bridging or change VLAN, it is not worth bothering with super passwords just for the WiFi encryption method. We really need to change the bridging, let’s take a look first How to change the bridge connection of Telecom optical modem The complete sequence of that article, don’t disconnect the entire cat just for a drop-down box.

I've also encountered another situation: The backend of optical modem clearly shows WPA2-PSK, and it changes back to mixed mode two days after saving. That's not because your hands are shaking, it's because the operator's ITMS issued the configuration in the middle of the night and pushed back the parameters you changed. If you encounter this, don't fight with the backend first, wait until it is released and then change it again, or directly contact the installation maintenance department to confirm whether the modem has been remotely locked and configured.

ending: Follow this sequence and you'll be fine in ten minutes.

I put the steps into a line and follow them without reworking.:

  1. Plug the computer into the network cable 192.168.2.1 , log in with useradmin on the back.
  2. Find the security/encryption method in WLAN or WiFi settings.
  3. For 2.4G, choose WPA2-PSK + AES. If 5G has WPA3, choose hybrid. If 5G doesn’t have WPA3, choose WPA2-PSK.
  4. Save, wait a dozen seconds, and reconnect your phone, computer, camera, and sweeper one by one.
  5. Which device cannot be connected? First confirm whether it is connected to 2.4G, and then check whether it only supports WPA2.

Don't underestimate this drop-down box. The default hybrid mode of Telecom Optical Mode shows that devices from decades ago can be connected. The price is that these Android boxes and cameras are confused when shaking hands. After changing it, you will find that many strange things like "the WiFi is full but can't connect" and "the password is obviously correct but you can't connect to the Internet" actually all happen in the same place.

By the way, encryption is just a lock on the WiFi end. The channel is too crowded and 2.4G is stuck at night. It is completely different from the encryption method. Then you have to change the channel. I will write it separately in How to change the WiFi channel of Telecom optical modem Yes, the two pitfalls are often committed together. You can check them both once you enter the backstage.

I later took a picture of the key parameters on this page and saved it in the photo album of my mobile phone. If someone's optical modem cannot connect to WiFi, first check this picture to check the encryption method, and then check the channel and frequency band, which can save half of the phone bill. Don’t wait until your whole family is disconnected to remember these two little switches in the background.
