How to change the Mercury background: The menu names in the old interface and the new interface are different

Mercury routers have two sets of backends from the same brand, and it took me a long time to find the menu names that differed by just one word. The D191G at my house has the old interface, and the M6G at my aunt's house has been replaced with the new interface. I have clicked on both of the following two paths on a real device.

The smoothest thing about the old interface: lose melogin.cn or 192.168.0.1 After entering, look at the left column, look for "Wireless Settings", and then click "Basic Settings". The "SSID" or "Wireless Name" box on this page is the WiFi name. If 2.4G and 5G have been separated, there will be two SSID boxes. ； If you only see a big box, it's likely that "multi-band integration" is still on, and the two frequency bands share the same name. Most of the new interfaces put the entrance in "Wireless Management" at the top or bottom left. Click in and look for "Wireless Name" or "SSID". If there are only "host network" and "guest network" on the page, the host network is the one used by family members. ； The guest network is another set, don't change it in the wrong place. After making the changes, click Save. The page will spin in circles for about ten seconds. The WiFi will disconnect and come back again. Computers with network cables plugged in will not be affected.

You can also change it on your mobile phone. Mercury App is now generally called MERCURY. After binding to the router, find "WiFi Settings" or "Wireless Settings" on the device homepage, and you can also see the wireless name. However, some models in the App only allow you to change the password, but not the name. Those that only allow you to change the name will place the two frequency bands in a deep position. I have only used Tenda AC10 and AX12 in the past few years. Both the old and new generations have their own characteristics.: The entrance is hidden in "Wireless Settings", and the name is quite straightforward. The words "Wireless Name" and "SSID" may appear in the middle, and they are the same thing.

In the old AC10 firmware, 2.4G and 5G are two tabs, and they need to be modified separately. When I helped my aunt change it, I only changed the 5G label. When I switched back to 2.4G, I saw it was still the old name. I thought the save failed, so I saved it again. In fact, I missed a column. This pit is more hidden on Tenda phones: Swipe down the WiFi settings page in the App, and 2.4G and 5G may be folded into two switches. Another big pitfall for Tenda is "dual-band optimization". Turn it on, 2.4G and 5G are merged into one name, and the name you see may actually be shared by both bands ； If you want to add a separate suffix to 5G, you must first turn off dual-band optimization. After saving, it usually takes ten seconds for the wireless module of the Tenda router to restart. It is normal for the main light of the router to stay on and the WiFi to disconnect first. I have encountered people who panic when they see that the WiFi is disconnected and immediately press reset. As a result, the management password is also cleared. Remember one thing here: Interrupting WiFi during the renaming process does not mean overturning the situation, pressing reset does.

After the modification, the mobile phone cannot be connected and the sweeper is disconnected. Follow this order to get the money.

Changing your name means giving a new identity to the network. The devices that were originally connected will not automatically follow you, and your mobile phone will not know that you have changed your name and will foolishly try the old password. I successively picked up equipment from my home and my relatives’ homes. The order is as follows.:

1. Click "Forget this network" on mobile phones and computers, then search for a new name and enter the WiFi password.
2. Only changed one frequency band? Go back and confirm that both the names of 2.4G and 5G have been changed. If you miss one, a batch of devices will still recognize the old name.
3. The old name is still in the phone list. Turn off WiFi and turn it on again, or refresh it every two minutes. Don't worry about it since the router has finished changing it.
4. Most devices such as cameras, sweepers, and door locks need to enter their distribution network mode and reconnect. You cannot use your mobile phone to forget the network.
5. If you can't connect, don't keep trying. First, make sure the WiFi password has not changed. Changing your name is not the same as changing your password. The typical situation I've stepped on is a sweeper. After changing the name, the sweeper went offline, but the App still showed "WiFi connected". In fact, it still had old network information inside, and the machine kept retrying the old name. This can only be done by entering the network configuration mode and selecting a new network. If you have many smart devices, it is strongly recommended to do the three things of changing the name, changing the password, and removing the dual-band at the same time, so as to avoid having to deal with dozens of devices in the family twice or three times.

Three rules for naming, don’t follow my first trip and use Chinese with spaces

Both Mercury and Tenda allow WiFi names to be written in Chinese, but this does not mean that all devices can tolerate it. The first time I changed Mercury to "living room network", the root cause of the radio disconnection was here: Its WiFi module has poor support for Chinese SSIDs, and a few garbled codes were found. Later, I unified the names into English and numbers, and this weird thing never happened again.

I abide by the three rules myself: First, Letters plus numbers are the most stable , use Chinese as little as possible, especially if you have old cameras, old printers, and old smart speakers at home. ； second, Dual frequencies are distinguished by suffixes ,for example jia302 and jia302_5G , you can see clearly which frequency band the connection is connected to at a glance ； third, Don’t put spaces, pound signs, percent signs, or emojis Some routers can save these special characters with no problem, but the devices have strange ways of parsing them. Don’t write the name too long. Generally, it should be within 32 characters, which is enough.

As for whether to include your house number and mobile phone number, my suggestion is not to. The WiFi name is for family members and guests to recognize, not for the whole building. Just write "302" to identify your own home. Putting your complete mobile phone number is equivalent to giving words to strangers. If you really want to prevent Internet fraud, you must rely on a strong password and turn off WPS, not a scary name.

Think carefully before changing your name: Do you really need to change?

Not every router is in a hurry to change its name. If there are not many devices at home, there are no default names with the same model around, and the WiFi password is strong, there is no problem in continuing to use the factory name. But in the following situations, I suggest you change them easily::

• When searching for WiFi, I found several identical default names in the same building. The phone may be connected to the wrong network.
• I have dual-band integrated at home, but when it freezes I can’t tell whether I am connected to 2.4G or 5G.
• The rented house has been rented by another person, and the online name still carries the information of the previous household, or I feel annoyed just looking at it.

It takes two minutes to change the name, but the price is that after the change, you have to reconnect the whole family's equipment. Before taking action, copy the WiFi password into the memo on your phone and then change the name in the background. ； After changing the phone, connect it to the phone for verification first, and then pack away the cameras and sweepers, which are the most difficult devices to configure.
