Router dial-up keeps failing after the optical modem is changed to bridge? First, connect the computer directly to the optical modem and dial once. You can tell who is responsible at a glance.
Two days ago, I changed the router at my cousin's house. The optical modem has been changed to a bridge connection, and the WAN port of the new router has been plugged in. I checked the broadband account and password repeatedly, and the result was that the dial kept spinning in circles and then played 691. My cousin insisted that he bought the wrong router. I asked him to move the computer out first and plug a network cable directly into the optical modem. In less than three minutes, it was found that the account password was missing one digit.
I advise friends at home who are struggling with bridging to do this action first. There is no need to disassemble the machine or enter the backend of the optical modem. You just need to temporarily remove the router and dial the number directly to the optical modem using your computer. Whether it can be dialed and what error is reported can directly cut the fault in half. This article is written according to my process that night. Who is responsible for the optical modem, router and error code? Just follow the test and you will have the answer.
Don't rush to change the optical modem, straighten the wiring and then test it.
The most critical point of the computer direct connection test is that the network cable must be plugged into the LAN port bound to the optical modem bridge. Nowadays, most optical modems have four or five ports on the back. The ones actually used for dial-up Internet access are often only LAN1 or the one marked Gigabit. The IPTV port and the phone port cannot be connected after a long time. Change which port is bound to the dial-up port during bridging. You can see it in the WAN connection table in the backend of Huiguangmao. It usually says "LAN1" or "Bound Port".
Before testing, unplug the router or remove the network cable, leaving only the computer and optical modem. On the other end of the computer, you can use a Category 6 network cable or the cable that comes with the optical modem. Don’t use an adapter like a USB network card first to avoid adding another variable. If the optical modem has been restored to routing mode, then the computer should be able to access the Internet automatically after being directly connected. This means that the modem is still dialing by itself, and the meaning of the test will be different. Regarding whether bridging should be changed and what needs to be followed after the changes, I am here Is it worth the trouble to change the optical modem to bridging? I did some calculations.
How to establish PPPoE broadband connection on computer
I often use Windows demos because this machine is the easiest for everyone to get their hands on. Press Win+R to enter ncpa.cpl Press Enter and the network connection window will open. ; For some old computers, you need to go to the control panel and then look for the "Network and Sharing Center", and you can still get there. Click "Set up a new connection or network" and select "Connect to the Internet". After the next step, look for "Broadband (PPPoE)" and fill in the broadband account and password given to you by the operator.
There are two places where novices are particularly prone to making mistakes. First, do not fill in the account number as useradmin or telecomadmin in the backend of Optical Mode. Those are used to manage Optical Mode and are not the same thing as dial-up accounts. ; Second, the tail of the account cannot be omitted from memory. In some areas, the domain name after @ is required, and in some cases, the mobile phone number is added with a suffix. One less digit is 691. If you are really not sure, just call the operator and ask the customer service to read the broadband account number and password again, or look them up on the installation list at the business hall.
You can name the connection whatever you want, and you can check "Remember this password" or not. After filling in the dot connection, if it has started to circle, we will wait to see the result. After the computer dials up successfully this time, it will get a public network IP. This IP should be the same type as the WAN port of the router that will get it in the future. You can also verify whether the operator has given you a public network address.
Dial it up, what does that mean?
The computer can dial up and open web pages. Congratulations. The optical modem, optical fiber line, and broadband account and password are all good. The problem basically narrows down to the router.: The WAN port is plugged in incorrectly, PPPoE is not selected as the Internet access method, the broadband account is filled in incorrectly, MAC address cloning is not done, or the router's own dial-up module is angry.
When you go back, first check whether the cable of the WAN port of the router is plugged into the port bound to the optical modem bridge, then go into the backend of the router, change the Internet access method to PPPoE, and type the account and password again by hand. If your home broadband has MAC binding, the new router will most likely need to do MAC cloning and copy the WAN port MAC of the old router into it. If you still can't dial it up after completing these two actions, you can restore the router to factory settings and press The sequence of dialing back to the Internet after resetting the router Go through it all.
There is also a small probability: The computer dial-up connection can be connected in seconds, and the router dial-up connection can also be connected, but the web page cannot be opened or the speed is extremely slow. It's probably not a dial-up problem, but something went wrong with the router's DNS, MTU, or the negotiation between the optical modem and the router. In this case, first check whether the negotiation rate of the router's WAN port is 100Mbps, and then change the DNS. Don't get stuck with dial-up.
If it reports 691 or 629, check the account and password first, don’t rely on the router.
It was 691 that night at my cousin’s house. 691 on the operator's end basically means "the username or password is incorrect", or it may be that the previous dial-up session has not been kicked offline. 629 is more direct, which means that the connection was closed by the peer. In many cases, the account is still hanging elsewhere, or the dial-up was repeatedly made in a short period of time and was temporarily blocked by the computer room.
If you encounter these two errors, first type out the account password in Notepad, check it bit by bit, and then manually enter it into the computer broadband connection. If you confirm that it is correct, stop and wait for two minutes before dialing again. It will take time for the old session in the computer room to be released. If it still doesn't work, call customer service and ask them to reset the broadband password online. After resetting, try using the new password immediately. After following this set of actions in my home, seven or eight times out of ten, I don’t need to touch the router.
| error code | Whose fault is it most likely? | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| 691/629 | Broadband account, password, old session | Check the account password one by one, wait two minutes to dial again, and call customer service to reset the password. |
| 651/678/769 | Line, network card, optical modem WAN table | Change ports and lines, check light attenuation, check VLAN and bound ports in the backend of the light modem |
Regarding the three-digit error message from the operator, I posted it alone What do broadband errors 678, 691, and 651 mean? I’ve unpacked it here, and if you’re not sure, you can check that article first.
Report 651, 678, 769, focus on checking the line and WAN table
651 and 678 appear, indicating that the computer has sent a dialing request, but the other party did not respond according to the rules. ; 769 generally means "The specified target address is not accessible." These three are not to be blamed on the router as soon as they come up. Because you have now removed the router and the computer still reports these errors when it is directly connected, the fault is most likely caused by the optical modem, network cable, network card or operator's line.
First change a network cable, change the optical modem to another LAN port and try again ; The computer's network card driver may be too old and the connection may not work. You can disable and enable the network card in the device manager. I encountered 651 once. After struggling for a long time, I found out that the LAN1 port bound to the optical modem bridge was a bit oxidized. It worked after switching to LAN2 and re-binding it. Therefore, changing the port and cable first has the lowest cost. Then go into the backstage of the optical modem and check the received optical power. It is generally between -8 and -27dBm. If it is close to -30, it is too high, and the network will be good and bad. If you can't get in through the backend via modem, or the PON light keeps flashing, it's faster to just ask the installation engineer to come and check the line than messing around on your own.
People who change bridging should take one more step: Have the VLAN ID and bound port in the Optical Mode WAN connection table been changed? When some friends changed the bridge connection, they deleted the VLAN of the INTERNET line by swiping, or selected the wrong binding port, so the direct connection to the computer naturally failed. VLANs vary from place to place, 41, 43, or 45 are possible. You must take a photo before changing. I'm doing this set of operations How to change the bridge connection of Telecom optical modem It is written in more detail, and the machines of China Mobile and China Unicom are also similar.
After finishing the test, do not leave the computer in the dial-up state.
No matter whether the test result is that the dial can be dialed or not, don't leave the computer connected to the PPPoE connection after the test. First disconnect the broadband connection, then change the IPv4 of the computer network card back to "obtain an IP address automatically" and "obtain a DNS server address automatically", then reconnect the WAN port of the router back to the binding port of the optical modem, power on and try again.
There is an order here that is easy to reverse: Plug in the router first, then power on the optical modem and router. Wait two minutes for the optical modem to register the line stably, and then go to the router background to dial. If it's the other way around, with the router dialing first and then the modem going online, a 629 message will sometimes appear. I recorded the bridging details of China Mobile and China Unicom Optical Mode respectively in How to change the bridge connection of mobile optical modem and How to avoid overturning when China Unicom optical modem is changed to bridge connection? Here, the accounts and VLAN habits of different operators are not exactly the same, but the computer direct connection test method is valid for all three families.
In the final analysis, dialing failure is not a metaphysics, it is dividing the fault into two parts: "before the optical modem" and "after the optical modem". If the computer can be directly connected, check the router. ; I couldn't get through the direct connection, so I stayed on the optical modem and the line to find it. Testing first and then changing is much more trouble-free than resetting the optical modem and changing the VLAN.
