Where to set up UPnP on Xiaomi router? PS5 online NAT3 keeps failing, I put 192.168.31.1 I turned to the bottom to find it
Last month, my cousin brought the PS5 to my house to test the connection. As soon as I entered the game, the "NAT type: Type 3". He spent two days at home, looking through the background of Xiaomi AX3000T, and finally told me that he suspected that UPnP was not turned on. I took the mouse and took a look. He really couldn't find the switch, but what's more troublesome is: Even if it is opened, his network may not be able to be saved. I accompanied him to investigate this matter for two nights, so I simply went over the UPnP issue of the Xiaomi router from the beginning.
Which door does UPnP manage? Don’t open it into a metaphysics first.
UPnP translates as Universal Plug and Play. When placed in a router, to put it bluntly, it allows the software to apply for opening ports with the router. The PS5 connection requires a port such as UDP 3074. You don’t need to fill in the rules manually. It says hello to the router itself, and the router automatically opens one for it and takes it back when it goes offline or is no longer used. For devices such as game consoles and BT downloads that are "temporarily used and the port will change", this thing is more comfortable than manual filling.
But it's not an accelerator. With UPnP turned on, your 500 MB broadband will not become 800 MB, and the WiFi should still be weak. Its scope of action is only one: Can the door that the intranet device actively applies for be opened automatically? So if you just browse the web and watch videos, you will almost feel nothing if you turn it on or not. ; It will only be used in scenarios where you need to actively enter your home from the outside, such as online connection, downloading and seeding, and remote access.
My cousin thought of it as a "game accelerator button" from the beginning, so after flipping around in the background for a long time, the direction went astray. When it comes to acceleration, it’s QoS and bandwidth allocation. ; What UPnP cares about is "whether others can find me", not "how fast the data runs". I want to first understand how NAT1, NAT2, and NAT3 are calculated. I wrote the principle in The NAT type article That’s it, I won’t repeat it here. This article only talks about the switches and pitfalls of Xiaomi routers.
192.168.31.1 Where exactly is it? The old firmware of AX3000T and Redmi is different.
The current set of firmware for my AX3000T, the path is: Computer browser 192.168.31.1 , after logging in, click "Advanced Settings" on the left or above, go in and find "Others", and then scroll down to find "UPnP Status". The switch is a toggle type. Remember to click Save after clicking it. Don’t quit after reading it. Some new firmware calls "others" "more advanced functions". The names are changed, but the level is still the same.
Old Redmi machines, especially the AC2100 ones, will have a slightly deviated path.: After logging in, first look for "System Settings", then click "Advanced Features" to find UPnP. There are also some very old firmwares. There is no independent entrance in the system settings at all. You can only see UPnP mapping in the list near "Security Center" or "Port Forwarding". Don’t look for the Mijia App. I specifically clicked on it. The router plug-in page only has restart, WiFi settings, speed limit, and security center. The UPnP switch is basically not included in the App. If you really want to move, just use the browser.
There is something confusing about Xiaomi here: The switch is called "UPnP status", not "Enable UPnP"」 . When my cousin saw this word for the first time, he thought it was just a status display, not an operation button, so he crossed it directly. In fact, when you click on it, it is a switch, and there are words like "Apply" and "Save" next to it. If you can't find it, just click browser search in the advanced settings and enter the three letters of UPnP, which will save you two minutes of browsing.
After opening and saving, why is the PS5 still NAT3?
My cousin is most angry about this step.: The switch is clearly blue, save is clicked, and the router is restarted. The PS5 still detects type 3. Teach him how to find out the NAT gear first, so that he can make accurate judgments later.: On PS5, go to "Settings → Network → Check Connection Status" and it will directly write Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3. ; For Xbox, go to "Settings → General → Network Settings" and look at "Open/Medium/Strict". The biggest problem with Switch is that it is not shown in the system. I always go into "Mario Kart 8" to build a lobby. My friends can't find it or report NAT-related errors. It can basically be treated as type 3.
My cousin is most angry about this step.: The switch is clearly blue, save is clicked, and the router is restarted. The PS5 still detects type 3. I took a look at his network and found that the root cause was not the Xiaomi router, but his optical modem. His broadband is an optical modem without any modification to the bridge connection. The optical modem is dialing by itself, and the Xiaomi AX3000T is connected below to do another layer of routing, which is equivalent to two doors. UPnP is only available on the Xiaomi floor. No one opens the door on the Lightmao floor outside, and the game console is still blocked.
This judgment is easy to make: Enter 192.168.31.1 Look at the WAN port IP. If the WAN port is 192.168.1.x or 192.168.2.x , basically shows that the optical modem is still in routing mode, and there is still a layer in front. If what you see is 100.64.x.x , 100.64.0.0/10 This section, that is, the operator's large intranet, cannot be saved, and UPnP is in vain. In both cases, the results cannot be found by relying on Xiaomi's backend alone, so you have to look up the results.
Another pitfall is that the device IP will change. My own PS5 originally got this 192.168.31.50 , and later there was a power outage at home, and then it turned into 192.168.31.57 , the old UPnP mapping is still hanging on 50, and the new 57 has not been applied at all. My cousin’s house is even more exaggerated. The PS5 is connected via WiFi, the mobile phone and the game console are randomly turned on with MAC, the IP is not fixed every day, and there are a lot of old ones in the UPnP list.
How to confirm that UPnP really takes effect? Look at the mapping list, don’t just look at the switch.
It doesn't count if the switch is on, you have to go to the mapping list to see it. In the "Advanced Settings" of Xiaomi backend, you can generally see the "UPnP Mapping List" or "Port Mapping" related pages, which list the device name, intranet IP, protocol, and internal and external ports. When the PS5 is online, one or several items should appear in the list. Commonly used ports are 3074, 3478, and 3480. The protocols include TCP and UDP. This new entry shows that UPnP is really working.
I taught my cousin a native method: First, shut down the PS5 completely or disconnect from the Internet. Refresh the list after a few minutes. Old entries will slowly disappear. ; Turn on the computer and connect to the Internet again to see if any new entries pop up. Yes, it means this automatic link is open ; If not, don’t focus on the switch. Check the upper two layers of NAT and public IP. It is also recommended to look through this list every once in a while. If you see a program you don’t recognize and make a lot of comments on your own, take a screenshot first and then delete it. For fixed devices such as NAS and monitoring, I do not allow them to rely on UPnP. The specific division of labor is described below.
How to choose between UPnP, port forwarding and DMZ
These three things deal with the same thing: Send requests from the external network to a device on the internal network. The difference is who drives it and how big it is. I put them together to make it clear, so as not to prevent someone from opening all three, and the stacking becomes more confusing.:
| Who will drive | How big to open | Suitable for whom | |
| UPnP | Apply for the software yourself | several ephemeral ports | Game console, BT download |
| port forwarding | You fill in the rules manually | Specify several fixed ports | NAS, monitoring, remote desktop |
| DMZ | You manually specify one | Entire device exposed | The last resort that really doesn’t work |
Remember simply: The temporary equipment you apply for will be handed over to UPnP, and the fixed services will be done manually. Xiaomi router port forwarding , don’t touch DMZ until the end. I have seen many people directly connect the PS5 to the DMZ, and the connection is indeed connected, but the machine is like standing on the external network without a shirt, and the risk is much higher than spending ten extra minutes to check UPnP and port forwarding. I have also written about Xiaomi’s DMZ entrance. If you really want to use it, read it first. Where to set DMZ on Xiaomi router , check the prerequisites of public IP and fixed IP first.
Whether to turn it on or off for a long time, I have three rules for my family.
It is true that UPnP is convenient, but it has an inherent flaw: As long as there is a program application on the intranet, the router will basically not ask whether you agree or not. A serious PS5 will apply, and a software of unknown origin will also apply, and it can also pretend to be "system" in the remarks. So it is not a switch that is turned on for a lifetime without thinking. I leave it on at home, but I use it in accordance with the three rules.
First, temporary devices such as game consoles and download machines use UPnP, and fixed devices such as NAS and monitoring devices must use manual port forwarding, not automatic port forwarding. Second, go through the mapping list once a month and delete items you don’t recognize or whose notes don’t match. ; If you really use the equipment, you will apply for it again next time you go online. Third, if you find that the WAN port starts with 100.64, or the optical modem and router are stacked in two layers, straighten out the network structure first, and don't expect UPnP to break through.
As for someone asking "Will turning it off completely will disconnect the Internet?" No, browsing the web and watching videos will have no effect at all, but WeChat videos, game connections, and downloaded software will cause problems first. If you want to close the complete account, I will write it in Should UPnP be turned off on the router? Okay, here I only give the conclusion.: For ordinary home use, game connection is the main requirement, so I leave it on and check the list regularly. ; The house is full of old people watching videos, and there is no connection or NAS. It is more worry-free to turn it off.
Last in order: advanced 192.168.31.1 Find "Advanced Settings→Others→UPnP Status", open it and save it, then check whether the WAN port IP is a public network, and then check whether there are new entries in the mapping list after the PS5 restarts. If not, check whether the modem is a two-layer NAT, and finally consider port forwarding or DMZ. Follow this order and there is no need to blindly read the backstage three times from beginning to end.
