Is the rental site too poor to change routes? I've tried portable Mesh, portable routers, and electric modems, but in the end, only two things remained

I have the right to say this because I've moved three times, and each time I have to reassemble the web at home. The old router from the first apartment is tucked in the lowest shelf of the entryway shoe cabinet. Once the metal door closes, the bedroom WiFi is two bays, and at night, watching videos can spin until you fall asleep. At the time, I didn't understand. My first reaction was to 'pull the network cable over,' but the landlord blocked me with one sentence: no holes in the wall, no exposed wires, and he locked the weak current box so it wouldn't be moved. The desktop and that second-hand NAS both need to use internet—what should I do? Over the past few years, I've tried every portable solution I could think of, wrote down the pitfalls I encountered, and if you're renting or planning to rent, just copy them.

The first iron rule of renting and networking is more important than any technical specs: all the network devices you buy must fit into a suitcase and take them away. I bought a ceiling AP for my first home. It was great when I installed it, but when I moved out, the landlord wanted me to restore it to its original condition. After removing it, I left two screw holes and a ring of offset marks, and the deposit was 200 yuan. From then on, my rule was: don't drill a hole in the wall, don't touch a single screw on the weak current box, and put everything on the desk or plug it into an outlet. Based on this iron rule, I divide the following options into two categories based on whether they can take them away. Only those who can take them away are the legitimate choices for renters.
Option 1: Portable Mesh, wireless backhaul type, I recommend it the most
This is the plan I'm still using now, and it's the only one I haven't changed after three moves. Buy a two-piece portable mesh set, with the main router plugged in the modem and the sub-router placed between the bedroom and main router for wireless backhaul, no need to pull cables. The key is that when you move, just stuff this device into your bag and go. It's okay if the modem in the new house is in different locations. Just place the router in a room with poor signal, and it automatically pairs after powering on—done in five minutes.
I bought a TP-LINK AX3000 portable mesh set, two for just over 400 yuan. Don't be fooled by the advertised "gigabit" when choosing such devices; you need to look at two hard criteria: first, whether the wireless backhaul has a dedicated band (called tri-band or backhaul-only), and second, whether the sub-router has network ports. My system is dual-band, with backhaul and internet access all under the same 5G connection. When the main router and sub-router are separated by a wall, the sub-router's speed can drop to 60% of the main router's speed. If your budget allows, go straight to the triple-band and run the return trip on a dedicated 5GHz lineup, with sub-router speeds barely dropping. Renting a place is usually one or two hundred square meters, with dual-band enough, but don't be tempted by cheap buying those "Mesh" generics that are actually just wireless repeaters. That device switches devices and cuts off the data so much you question your life.
There's a pitfall with the placement of the sub-router that I've encountered before: don't put it next to the distribution box at the bedroom door. That metal box is basically a black hole for 5G signals. When I first set it up, my phone was still two bars on the bed. Move it to the nightstand, within half a meter of the wall on the main road, and immediately fill the space. The sub-router of Mesh is essentially a relay; it must first receive the signal from the main router before amplification. If placed too far away, it is like being deaf and still listening for others. How do you check if the location is correct? Don't just look at the phone signal. Let the router light turn green (different brands have different colors—TP is green, Xiaomi is blue). Only when the green light turns on is it considered a successful handshake.
Option 2: Portable router + mobile hotspot, can last a few days temporarily, but not long-term
For a while, my new home hadn't even had broadband installed, so I used a portable router for four days. A portable router is the kind of small device that can be plugged into a SIM card, powered by battery, and palm-sized to carry when going out. Honestly, using it as your main device for renting is a pitfall: first, data is expensive. I plug in my main card for broadband, and I use nearly 40GB a month, with fees outside the package making me anxious; Second, it operates 5G/4G base stations. During the evening rush hour, base station congestion in rental housing areas is common, with speeds dropping from 200 Mbps to 200 or 30 Mbps; Third, if you really use it as broadband, your phone loses network because the card is occupied by the router.
So the correct usage of this thing is "emergency response," not "main force." Taking care of the days when broadband isn't fully installed, bringing clean internet when you go out to a hotel—these two scenarios are really great. For long-term use, honestly get a broadband one. There's a multiple-choice question for renting broadband: should you continue using the one left by the landlord or redo it yourself? From my experience, if the landlord keeps a very old 100Mbps fiber modem or a second-hand dial-up, just get a new one yourself. The same-city broadband costing 200-300 yuan a year is much less hassle than dealing with old equipment, and you can even get a mobile phone after terminating the lease. Before applying, ask clearly if you can transfer your phone; don't try to get a cheap fix with a locked address.
Option 3: Electric Cats—old, rundown, small apartments, and shared rentals are the most likely to fail, so proceed with caution
The electric cat is advertised as a great thing: plug in a socket and you can use the wires like network cables, no need to pull wires or drill holes. It sounds like it was made for rental housing. I bought a pair for my second home, over 200 yuan. The main router plugged into one next to the road, another in the bedroom, and the bedroom connected to a desktop, so it had wired connections. The dream was full of ambition, but the reality was that I logged down on Xianyu after just a week.
There are three pitfalls that renters must know. First, the power modem must be connected to the same electricity meter circuit to turn on. Many old houses and shared apartments have several air switches running through the same room, but once you cross the circuit breaker, it stops working. Even if you plug in the light, it won't turn on without you even knowing why. Second, wire quality determines speed. New residential communities have thick copper wires and short wiring, capable of reaching two to three hundred megawatts; Old and worn-out aluminum wires, junction boxes, and a bunch of connectors. In my apartment, the bedroom end was only about 30 Mbps, which is slower than wireless. Third, high-power appliances interfere as soon as you turn them on. If a roommate turns on a hair dryer, desktop ping jumps to hundreds and games disconnect. So the Electric Cat can only be bought under one premise: you're renting a whole rental from recent renovations, have your own meter, and there's definitely a corner where wireless calls can't be reached. If it's a shared apartment or an old house, don't touch it—my two hundred yuan is just tuition.
Option 4: USB wireless network card, a cheap way to keep your desktop computer alive
If you rent a desktop and want internet access, and you don't want to run cables or buy a Mesh sub-router, the cheapest way is to plug a USB wireless network card into the desktop. It costs about thirty yuan each, just plug in and install the driver to connect to WiFi. I used this trick to keep an old desktop PC alive. It's good enough, but don't expect it to run at full speed. The USB 2.0 network card bandwidth is capped at around 300 Mbps, and that small antenna is behind the metal case, with half the signal blocked by the case. If it can reach 100 Mbps across a wall, that's a blessing. It's fine for browsing web pages and watching videos, but when loading large files or playing competitive games, it lags.
If you want more security, buy PCIe ones with built-in network cards and external antennas, but that requires unscrewing the case to install it, and it's troublesome to remove it after renting out. It doesn't follow the "take-away" rule, so I don't recommend it. A compromise is to buy a USB 3.0 network card with a small antenna, costing around 50 yuan, which is much better than a pure USB card. Disassembly and installation are just about unplugging a USB port. Another pitfall: don't buy those "drive-free" generic brands. Win10/11 occasionally can't recognize them, so after searching for drivers, stick to models with chips (like RTL8811 or MT7601), which are much more reliable.

Finally, I'll write down the order of how to re-network on the day of moving. The third time I moved, I followed this method—full network access in half an hour. Step one: Power on the optical modem, wait for the PON light to stay on (if it doesn't light up or flashes red, contact the carrier. Don't mess with the device—it's about the cable). Step 2: Plug the main router into the optical modem port 1 (gigabit port, don't plug into the 100M IPTV port), and wait for the main router to light up. Step three: Power the sub-router in the room with the lowest signal. Watch as it shakes hands with the main router and lights up green; if not, move the router to another location. Step 4: Plug the desktop into a USB network card or connect a network cable to the LAN port. Step five: Take out your phone and walk around the house to measure speed. Move the sub-route half a meter in that direction to see which angular velocity drops the most.
The most easily overlooked part of this setup is the first light mode. Many optical modems only have port 1 for gigabit and port 2 for 100Mbps, even linked to IPTV. If the main router is inserted into the wrong port, gigabit broadband will instantly become 100Mbps, and no matter how you adjust the router, it won't work. The bottom of the modem usually shows which port is gigabit; if not, it uses port 1. For example, the ZTE F7015 and similar have port 1 gigabit and port 2 for IPTV. Renters have no plans to modify their wiring, so they have to be even more particular about the outlets. Also, a note about the difference between Mesh and wireless relay: many people make the wrong choice when renting or buying a house. Wireless relay means the sub-device only forwards without handshakes. When you walk from the living room to the bedroom, your phone has to reconnect and the stream is cut off; Mesh is the sub-router and main router on the same network. When the phone walks over, it automatically switches to the stronger signal and keeps streaming. It might not matter if the rental area isn't large, but if you're making video calls while walking, the relay plan will definitely be interrupted, and Mesh won't. Don't save this money, don't spend it
Summarize which money is worth spending and which is wasted. This Flower: A two-piece portable mesh set (three-frequency is best, dual-frequency is enough), 400 to 600 yuan, enough to help you move several homes; A better USB 3.0 wireless network card for the desktop costs 50 yuan; getting a local broadband that can carry the device costs 200 to 300 yuan per year. These are assets you can "take with you," so moving is not wasted. Don't spend: ceiling AP and panel AP (need to drill holes and weak current boxes; you can't take them out after renting, and they've already been tested); Power modem (unless you are sure of the meter and wiring conditions, there is a high chance of failure); A "gaming-specific" portable router costing just a few hundred yuan (rent a base station is congested during evening rush hour, so the premium isn't worth it); There's also the big set with one main router and four sub-routers. If you rent a place of one or two hundred square meters, you don't need four sub-routers; buying two units is enough, and the extra sub-routers are left unused.
The core of renting and networking can be summed up in one sentence: treat the internet as luggage, not as decoration. For everything, use desktop placement, sockets, and bags; choose portable broadband devices that can be moved; for Mesh, choose portable wireless backhaul models; and desktop USB network cards are used as tops. If you follow these steps, next time you move, you can assemble FamilyMart in a new place within half an hour, leaving the landlord's broken router for their own use.
