Tenda Router App Can't Be Bound? I sorted out five scenarios one by one; the second-hand ones were the most troublesome to get tied up

last month, I bought a second-hand Tengda AC23 on Xianyu, thinking about replacing it with the rented apartment, so I can manage it remotely from home. As a result, when the Tenda Router app was bound, a line popped up: This device has been bound to another account. It took three days of struggle before binding it to his name, and he had almost stepped into every pitfall he could avoid when binding failed. This article will explain the five situations where you can't bind yourself one by one. Each symptom is different, and targeted treatment can help avoid detours.
first take 30 seconds to figure out: what exactly is binding
The binding in the Tenda router app actually involves two steps. Step 1: Local discovery : The phone is connected to the router's WiFi, and the app scans it from the local network; Step two: Cloud registration : The app registers the router's MAC address under the account registered with your phone number. Then, when you open the app thousands of miles away, it forwards commands through Tengda's cloud server.
you understand these two steps, the troubleshooting direction is clear: the device can't be found in the App at all, which means the first is down, with the problem between the phone and router; found it, but the binding kept spinning and finally gave an error. The second step was down, and the problem was between the router and the external network. When it comes to symptom-based treatment, don't rush to the factory and waste your efforts.
two best configurations: connecting to the wrong WiFi or not granting permissions
Situation 1: The phone is not connected to the router's WiFi. sounds like nonsense, but quite a few people have fallen for it. My visitor network and the main network have different names. My father-in-law's phone defaults to a neighbor's network with a stronger signal, and no matter how I refresh, the app is empty. There are also data bindings enabled—app local discovery only uses WiFi, and the traffic channel does not show the router. There is only one confirmation method: in the phone's WiFi list, the currently connected name must be broadcast by this Tenda.
Situation 2: Android does not grant location permissions. this pit is the most insidious. After Android 9, the rule is that apps must obtain location permissions to scan nearby WiFi devices, even if they don't have location at all. If you set Tengda Router App's location permissions to 'Reject' in your phone's settings, it will play blind, won't find any devices, and won't prompt you why. My Xiaomi phone is like this—permission set to 'Allow only when used', and as soon as you refresh the device, it appears. Apple doesn't have this issue, so it also fails to bind. Android users check permissions first, Apple users skip this rule.
machines with outdated firmware and the app doesn't recognize them at all
Situation 3: The router's firmware is too old and doesn't support cloud management. Tenda's cloud management started rolling out firmware gradually after 2016. The AC9 I bought in 2015 is a typical example: the app can scan it, and when you tap binding, it prompts 'Current firmware version is too low, please upgrade first.' There's still a way to save this—enter the tendawifi.com backend in your browser (if you don't remember how to get in, check my previous post Change WiFi password on Tenda phones, the full entry point inside). In system settings, click online upgrade, restart, and bind the app again to get through.
truly hopeless is the older generation, such as the early AC series leaving the factory without cloud management, and the official firmware list has stopped updating it. Don't stick to apps on this kind of device; web backend management works just fine, with no shortage of features, just missing the convenience of remote work. How to check: Go to Tenda's official website and search for the model on the service support page, check the latest firmware release date. If it stops before 2018, you can basically give up on the app option.
prompt "Bound by another account"—the most troublesome
situation for second-hand users: the device is bound to the original owner's account. this is my main pitfall this time. The binding pop-up clearly tells you the device already has an owner, but it doesn't tell you how to find the original owner. There are only three paths to unbinding, and I will pay the price from small to large:
- ask the seller to delete the device in the app. the original owner opened his own Tenda router app, long-pressed this device in the device list, then deleted and unbind, and you could bind it immediately. Before placing an order, I told the seller to "unbind the app before payment." The smoothest step was because the seller refused to reply to messages, which is why I went through the last two messages.
- restore the factory and wait for the cloud release. hold the reset port for more than 8 seconds to return the router to factory settings. After resetting some models, cloud binding will be released simultaneously; just wait a few hours before binding again; But for newer machines like the AC23, cloud records are kept for a while. I only reattached it the day after resetting. Officially, some models take up to 72 hours to save. Note that the reset will clear all settings. The rental apartment is already waiting to be re-installed, but I don't mind. If you're using it for your own home, think carefully. Dig up your broadband account password and remember it. I'll write the entire process for redialing in the article after reset.
- forced unbinding of Tengda customer service appeals. the first two methods fail (for example, sellers canceling accounts and disappearing), just contact customer service. The phone number is still displayed in the app help center and official website. Provide the router's MAC address and purchase proof. After verification, the cloud will forcibly unbind it. The official says it takes 1 to 3 working days. The day I appealed was Friday, and on Monday morning I received a text message saying the unbinding was complete. So when buying a second-hand Tengda, make sure the seller clearly photographs the back labels on the device. Photos with blurred MAC addresses and SN codes are basically worthless.
local search and binding spinning: no external network connection
Scenario 5: Local discovery successful, cloud registration stuck. App you can see the router. After clicking bind, the progress bar gets stuck in the middle, and after a long process, it finally says "Binding failed, please try again." This is the fault of the second step—the router itself can't connect to the external network, and the cloud server can't reach it. When binding, the router is usually still factory without dialing, or you may have switched to the environment with the optical modem still not working.
first plug in the router's WAN port and network cable so it can access the network from the optical modem. How to check if it's working: Go to the tendawifi.com backend with your browser, check the external network status on the homepage, or simply connect your phone to the router's WiFi and open a webpage. If you can open the webpage, it means it's open to the outer network. Going back to the app and rebinding should basically pass. If the webpage won't open, check the optical modem upstream: check whether the optical modem's LOS lights are red or not, whether the system is unpaid or shut down. I previously wrote about the troubleshooting order in the article speed test failing standards, covering everything from the optical modem to the network cable.
Onceis bound, there are five things you can do when you're away from home
and going in such a big circle to link your account depends on how you use it. Remote capability: View online device lists, kick unfamiliar devices, change WiFi passwords, restart routers, install firmware upgrade reminders with one click. I paired this AC23 for my rental apartment for this idea—the tenant said the network was off, and I checked remotely to see how many devices were online and who was running the data. Most issues don't require on-site visits. Previously, I wrote about the complete route to changing passwords: App and tendawifi.com, , so I won't repeat them here.
also can't do anything: routers lose power or external networks, the cloud completely loses contact, apps are shrouded in gray and nothing can be done; For advanced settings like WAN dial-up account and port forwarding, most models still need to be locally accessed via the webpage backend. Also, don't forget that binding means your phone number is the key. Don't use admin to mess with the admin password for management. If you don't know the rules for initial passwords, check Tengda initial password article. I've also written a version of Xiaomi's Mi Home app, and the logic is pretty similar. If you're interested, check out Mi Jia's remote management .
| Step one | check if your phone is connected to Tenda's WiFi, turn off data and refresh |
| Step two | Check Android app location permissions and set it to 'Allow when used' |
| Step 3 | App If you can't find it: the old firmware is upgraded online via web page |
| the fourth step | prompt that it has been bound: seller unbinding, reset, etc. for 72 hours, Customer service appeals with a choice of one of three |
| Step 5 | find but spin: first connect the router to the external network, then rebind |
| Step 6 | After binding, change the admin management password. For second-hand machines, be sure the seller unbinds before payment |
heartfelt words: From now on, when buying a second-hand Tengda, have the seller open the app on their phone and delete the device in person before payment, which is much easier than any remedial afterwards. I spent three days this time—half waiting for the cloud release, half fighting with customer service. Just thinking about it feels like a loss.
