my router has been used for three years, and the WiFi name has always been the factory default TP-LINK_5G. One night last month, I was lying in bed scrolling through videos and spinning around. I thought it was a broadband leak, but when I checked the WiFi details, it was connected to "TP-LINK_5G," but the gateway was 192.168.0.1, not my phone at all. I don't know which household downstairs has the same router model, but the factory name is exactly the same. The phone keeps switching between two networks with the same name, and whoever has the better signal connects to whom, without even asking me.

Why would a good name need to be touched

other type is the building where people by default by name. In old residential complexes and densely packed rental buildings, searching for names starting with ChinaNet, TP-LINK, or MERCURY yields more than a dozen names. Not only is the chance of name clashes high, but the default name also tells others "this router probably hasn't changed its password," making it easy to get attention. : Connect your computer network cable to the router's LAN port (WiFi is fine, but it will disconnect immediately after renaming; the cable is the most stable). Step 4, enter the name and click Save. The router's wireless module will restart for about ten seconds, and the network cable device remains completely unaffected. second, brand apps: Xiaomi's Mijia, TP-LINK apps, and Mercury apps all have WiFi setup portals. You can save and rename them directly to your router, so you can change them even when you're away. The advantage of changing the app is that if you disconnect after changing the name, the operation won't interrupt—if you change the browser, your phone will instantly disconnect and the page will freeze, but the renaming is already effective, so don't panic.

The router's name is essentially a network identifier; old devices are built according to old standards, only recognizing letters and numbers. Second: For dual-frequency splits, add a suffix after the name. For example, 2.4G is called wangjia302, 5G is called wangjia302_5G. This way, it's clear at a glance which band your phone is connected to, making speed testing and troubleshooting much easier. Whether to split the dual-frequency band depends on personal preference. My suggestion is to split up multiple devices with smart home devices—many smart devices only recognize 2.4G, so after disassembly, they should have their phones and computers have 5G extensions, so they don't conflict. Third Rule: Within 32 characters, do not include spaces or symbols. WiFi name standard limit is 32 characters, and one Chinese character counts as one character, but compatibility is poor. Spaces and symbols like hashtags and AND can cause parsing issues on some devices. The underline is safe, the numbers are safe, and other symbols can be used if possible.
one more reminder: no matter how flashy the name is, it can't "hide" the internet; anyone in the know can scan it and find it. this is the most easily overlooked step for beginners. Changing the name is like giving the network a new ID card; all devices treat it as a new network, and even if the password stays unchanged, you have to reconnect. last time I changed the name and removed dual-band, reconfigured the network for three cameras and two speakers one by one. Not everyone needs to change. If you're a detached house or neighbors are far apart, just use your name by default, and no one will clash with you, so there's no rush. But in the following situations, I suggest you change them over the weekend:

- smart devices at home (dismantling dual-band to mark stable bands for network setup),
- rental apartments and places with high floating populations (default names plus default passwords, basically unprotected)
