Last year, when I went to a service center to renew my broadband contract, the young woman at the counter immediately said, "Sir, your home is suitable for FTTR, with gigabit direct to every room." I've heard this phrase for three years, but every time I just brush it off, but last year I slipped and drew a lot. After installing and using it for a year, I've encountered pitfalls like speed testing, roaming, and bridge modifications. Today, I'll be clear: FTTR isn't a scammer, but it's not something everyone should install either.

first clarify what FTTR is and how it differs from regular broadband

the rule for regular broadband is "fiber to the doorstep": the fiber is pulled from the hallway fiber distribution box into your weak current box, connected to the optical modem, and the rest of the process depends on the network cable or wireless router to handle everything yourself. Which room in your home has poor signal, regardless of the carrier.

FTTR stands for Fiber To The Room. It has an extra layer: a main optical modem inside the weak current box, which then pulls the fiber cable from the main modem into each room, and places a palm-sized from the optical modem in each room. Essentially, the modem is an "optical AP"—fiber comes in, WiFi and network port go out.

my home is a telecom set: the main optical modem is a Huawei OptiXstar F50, two S300 optical modems, one living room TV cabinet, and one master bedroom bedside unit. The whole house WiFi is unified under one name, which is the origin of the official phrase "Gigabit to room"—every optical modem has a fiber of optic behind it, so there is no back-trip discount on wireless return.

service center gave me the following conditions: no installation fee and free equipment, provided the package upgrade from 129 to 159 yuan with a two-year contract. The installer worked for two hours, using 30 meters of leather fiber optic cables along the baseboard, nailing each nail one by one—the craftsmanship was impeccable.

came back, I did the math: an extra 30 yuan per month, so over two years it was 720 yuan. It's like spending 720 yuan to hire a carrier to set up a whole-house network for me, with lifetime warranty. At this price, hiring someone to lay the network cable alone wouldn't cover labor costs. Sounds pretty good, right? Hold on, keep reading.

one thing the technician said before leaving: he only handles turning on the lights and checking speed tests; he doesn't care about what to do with the mesh of the original router at home. My old Mesh was completely out of the loop and gathered dust. If you already had an AC+AP set, you might have to rebuild.

One-Year Test: Room Speed Test Is Really Impressive, Roaming Is Really Average

say good things first. Standing in the living room, I connected my phone to 5G speed checks from the optical modem and 940Mbps; The master bedroom is separated by a wall, 870. Previously, I used two Mesh wireless backhaul devices, and remote rooms only got 300 to 500 at most. This improvement is real, and the difference in experience when downloading large files is even more noticeable.

to be honest: just like roaming. Carrying my phone, I walked from the living room to the master bedroom, and the video would lag for a second or two before I could switch over. The switching protocol running between optical modems is 802.11kvr, which theoretically works, but the switching speed is half a step slower than the Mesh I built from the same brand before. Light video browsing is fine, but mobile game movement players will curse in the street.

even more frustrating is the freedom of settings. The WiFi settings entry on the optical modem is pitifully few: channel auto, power auto, band integration is indispensable, and the management interface leaves you an opening to change the WiFi name and password. "Just treat it as a black box"—these are the exact words of the installer, take a closer look.

four pitfalls I've fallen into, think carefully before installing

pitfall one: IPTV goes black first. originally, the set-top box's optical modem connected via network port 3 went through the IPTV dedicated line. Once FTTR was on, the optical modem's network port didn't separate from this, and the set-top box went black immediately when plugged in. In the end, I had to file a 10,000 work order, and the backend reissued the VLAN before it was saved. I wrote about the trick of set-top boxes and broadband sharing the same cable. I wrote about it in the of IPTV single-wire multiplexing. This logic still works on FTTR, but you can't do it yourself—you have to rely on work orders.

two pits, the bridge was rebuilt to connect the Heavenly Book. anyone who uses NAS knows the process of converting optical modem to bridge. I previously wrote about whether switching to bridge optical modem is worth the effort. Once you enter the FTTR main optical modem, you'll find the WAN connection table is completely different from a regular optical modem. There are internal management channels between master and slave modem. Following the standard "copy VLAN, delete old building, and bridge" setup usually results in a whole-house network disconnection. To get hands-on permission, you have to first pass the super password test. I've discussed this in detail in my on Telecom's super password, but whether it works on FTTR models depends on luck himself.

pit three: the optical modem is an asset of the operator. last summer, during a thunderstorm, the S300 in the master bedroom was damaged by the surge. I called number 10,000 for a free replacement, but waited three days. The downside is you have no control over it: you can't flash it, you can't replace your own, and if it breaks, you just have to wait. The benefits are clear—no money.

Pitfall 4: Quitting the internet, moving family, leaving the cat behind. the contract expires or you move, the master and slave optical modem will be fully reclaimed, and the 30-meter fiber optic cable will be left in the corner of the house for the next house. If the next company isn't a telecom operator, then this pile of cables is just for show.

FTTR and you lay network cables yourself, one sheet for the clearest reason

friends who have renovated should remember my repeated phrase when writing network cable planning : "Leave a mouth in every room." FTTR and self-distributed network cable + AP are essentially two solutions to the same problem:

three suitable categories for installation: First, large flats without embedded network cables or two-story self-built houses where wall repairs cost far more than 720 yuan, making FTTR the easiest solution; Second, rented taken over, landlords don't allow renovations, but at least open and leather lines can be used as baseboards; Third FamilyMart only wants something usable —black box is black box, and if it breaks, call 10,000 for zero learning costs.

three types to avoid touching: first, you left a network cable during renovation. The cards you have are better than FTTR, so don't waste them; Second, playing with soft routers, OpenWrt, or bypass routers, the optical modem is sealed off like a safe, leaving your plugins nowhere to operate; Third, upgrading package tier isn't cost-effective. For example, if you currently have a 99-yuan integrated plan, forcing it up to 159 yuan adds 60 yuan per month, making it 1440 yuan over two years, which is enough to buy a very good Mesh set with change.

Wrap up with a decision order: first open the network cable for the weak current box—if there is a network cable, go for the AP solution; No network cable, so first try two Mesh units for wireless backhaul. If the remote end can run over 500 km, it means the apartment is not bad, and it can be used with patience; If not, the room will always be below 200-300 Mbps. Then go to the service center to negotiate FTTR, and remember to set the package to the lowest possible level.
