Should you enable MLO on a WiFi 7 router: Dual-link simultaneous transmission diagram and comparison with the three-pit setup

last month, the old router at home was honorably retired and replaced with a Xiaomi BE3600, a Qualcomm quad-core 1.1GHz, 256MB RAM, four gigabit ports, and a WiFi 7 entry-level phone just over 600 yuan. The day after setting it up, I was scrolling through the background and saw a switch called "MLO" in WiFi settings, which simply stated: When enabled, devices supporting WiFi 7 can connect to two bands simultaneously. I checked the WiFi details on my phone, and the frequency band section clearly listed "2.4GHz & 5GHz," with a negotiated speed of 3570Mbps—a phone running two links simultaneously is MLO.

I kept this switch on for a whole week, then turned it off again, and after a few days, I turned it on again to compare. To get straight to the point: it's not a 'IQ tax,' but the speed is different from what most people think, and the cost of driving it is unbearable for many.

first put MLOs in plain language: one path becomes two

old phones connected to WiFi, regardless of the router's band, there was only one link at a time: either 2.4G or 5G, with the two bands being a "choose one." When the signal is good, connect to 5G; when you walk to the balcony, only one bar of 5G remains, then switch your phone to 2.4G. During those one or two seconds of switching, the video lags a bit.

MLO (Multi-Link Operation) is a feature only available on WiFi 7: the phone and router are directly connected by two cables, with 2.4G and 5G connected simultaneously, allowing data to be sent and received from both channels simultaneously. You can think of it as the only road from home to the office, blocked during the morning rush hour; Now that a service road has been built, when the main road is congested, the service road can be topped, allowing both sides to run together. Bandwidth is the sum of two lines; latency depends on which lane is empty, so it uses that line.

Xiaomi phone, this feature is called "Dual WLAN Acceleration." The entry point is in the settings for WLAN and network acceleration, paired with the router's MLO mode, and only takes effect when both are enabled. Note a key premise: when the router enables MLO, the participating frequency band must the same WiFi name, password, and encryption method, meaning it must be dual-band integration. If you break down the name, MLO becomes invalid—this is the root cause of the pitfall in the rest of the story.

test for a week: fast, but fast in places you never imagined

first, let's talk about what I'm most looking forward to: international speed testing. Gigabit broadband, single 5G connection measured 938 Mbps, then tested again with MLO enabled, 941 Mbps. No change, not a trace at all. The logic is simple: broadband gives you 100GB, and the router's four ports are also gigabit ports. The wireless side stacks the highest negotiated speed, but the outlets get blocked, and the stacked portion is blocked right at your doorstep. If you expect MLO to speed up downloads, you can give up.

truly benefited from intranet transmission. When I copied photos into a Feiniu NAS, when I connected to 5G, the speed stabilized around 60MB/s; After enabling MLO and standing in the same room as the router, the speed spiked to 92MB/s—the 2.4G link really added about 30MB/s. The negotiated speed increased from 2882Mbps per 5G link to 3570Mbps in a "2882+688" configuration, with the stacking ratio basically matching the actual measurements. If you have a NAS at home and frequently transfer large files between phones and computers, this part of the income is something you can get every day.

second improvement is "continuous flow." Holding my phone, I walked from the living room to the bedroom and then onto the balcony. Previously, when 5G was weak and switched to 2.4G, video calls would freeze for a second; the two MLO links stayed there, the weaker side gradually faded, the stronger side stepped up, and I didn't feel it the whole time. This return is hard to quantify, but once you've used it, you can't go back.

I also tested game latency. Over three nights, the ping fluctuated from 35 to 42 milliseconds to 32 to 38. Better than nothing—don't open it just for gaming.

three pitfalls: the first one trapped me

pit one, IoT equipment suffers . As mentioned earlier, MLO must be dual-band integration, but my home network has been dismantled for dual-band: the robot vacuum, camera, and two speakers only recognize 2.4G. Originally, 2.4G was specifically named as an IoT private network, making network configuration worry-free and free from 5G interference. To enable MLO and reconnect the frequency bands, the next time the robot vacuum is configured in a deadlock—these two needs are inherently competing, so you have to choose one. Among the people I know, far more people give up their MLOs for this than give up their IoT private networks for MLOs. Pitfall 2: Mesh large units don't join the crowd . MLO allows devices to connect two bands simultaneously. During roaming, switching between sub-routers requires coordinated frequency bands, and stacking a dual-link significantly increases the probability of logical errors in switching. I've seen more than one user report on forums using BE3600 with Mesh: after enabling dual-band integration and MLO mode, the whole room would inexplicably drop traffic, and turning off multi-frequency integration would immediately calm down. Small apartments with a single router don't matter; for networks with two or more units and over 130 square meters, my suggestion is to leave the MLO for others to handle. Pitfall 3: compatibility with older devices and phone power consumption. MLO is a feature only available on WiFi 7 terminals. At home, there are a bunch of old phones and computers with WiFi 5 and WiFi 6 useless, and even if you turn them on, it's pointless—they should connect to 5G. What's even more annoying is that some older devices don't connect steadily to WiFi 7 routers. ASUS's official FAQ specifically includes a backup plan: there's a "WiFi7 mode" switch in the "Network" section of the management page and the WiFi configuration file of the main network, which is enabled by default. If old devices can't connect or frequently disconnect, they just turn it off to ensure compatibility. My device had to upgrade its firmware once before fixing the disconnection of the old WiFi 5 device. My phone lost 3% more battery in one night of standby, which serious battery anxiety users should consider.

Switch Is Hidden: Xiaomi and ASUS's Two Paths

Xiaomi and Redmi BE series: manage the backend at 192.168.31.1, then go to "Common Settings" and "WiFi Settings" to find the MLO option (some firmware versions are hidden in the advanced WiFi settings). After enabling it, confirm that 2.4G and 5G have the same name and password. On the phone, go to "Settings," "WLAN," and "Network Acceleration," and enable "Dual WLAN Acceleration"—both are essential. After connecting, the WiFi details show the frequency band "2.4GHz & 5GHz," which means it's done.

ASUS BE series: In the web backend, under 'Network', click on the main network's WiFi profile. 'WiFi 7 mode' is enabled by default. This switch manages all WiFi 7 features. MLO follows, and old devices turn off it. TP and ZTE's new models also have MLO, though the terms differ slightly. Just focus on terms like "multi-link," "MLO," and "dual-band aggregation."

another easily overlooked point: for the intranet to fully utilize MLO's overlay bandwidth, the opposing devices must also be strong. From the phone to the NAS link, the NAS side is a gigabit port with a maximum of 117MB/s. 92MB/s is already the CPU limit for my phone. If you really want to run over 100Mbps, you need a full upgrade of the router and NAS. I've done the math once, and there's quite a stir: 10G intranet, should I go to ? my closing advice: three steps

Step one: upgrade the router's firmware to the latest before discussing MLO. Many compatibility bugs in this generation of WiFi 7 are fixed in the firmware; mine only stabilized after upgrading the firmware to older devices. Step two: Make sure your main phone supports WiFi 7 and has dual WLAN acceleration enabled. After connecting, check if the frequency band bar shows an "&" symbol. Step three: Drive for a week, keep an eye on three things: whether the vacuum camera's camera is throwing a tantrum, moving around the house without interruption, and whether your phone is draining faster. If any one is affected, first turn off MLO to maintain dual-band integration; if that doesn't work, disconnect the entire dual-band and separate them. The stability of IoT and senior phones will always be ahead of flagship phones.

ultimately, MLO is just like that: the technology exists, the benefits remain, but by default, the target is the newest device in your home, and the stability of your network's network is often tied to the oldest device. First, think carefully about who is in charge at home before flipping this switch.
