have had two Mesh setups at home AX3000T for almost a year, and networking itself is very smooth—just one click. What really annoyed me was what happened afterward: I walked from the living room to the bedroom, the router was hung on the wall by the bedroom door, the phone signal was still full, but the video was stuck like a PowerPoint slide. He took out his phone and saw it was still firmly connected to the main router in the living room, not switching at all.

This is what is called 'roaming stickiness.' At first, I thought that after setting up a Mesh, everything would be fine, but in reality, networking is just about setting up the network. Whether phone is willing to switch between two devices is another . This article explains everything I've struggled with for a month to figure out: how to confirm stickiness issues, which parameters are worth adjusting, and which are useless even if adjusted. first understand: switching is up to the phone, not the router

many people, like me, thought there was a commander in the Mesh who would "kick" the phone to the one with better signal at the right moment. In fact the protocol always decides when to switch the phone itself. The router can only do two things: broadcast its presence and help you speed up the handover at the moment of switching.

each phone has its own unique temperament. Apple's threshold is quite aggressive—it cuts off as soon as the signal drops; Xiaomi and Samsung phones are much lazier; as long as old connections are still acceptable, they just stick with them. So with the same Mesh, your iPhone can switch quickly in the bedroom, while your family's Xiaomi phone is stuck to the main router— this isn't a broken router, it's a strategic difference among phone manufacturers. Understanding this, many subsequent "metaphysics" are no longer mysterious.

Step 1: First, use the numbers to confirm if your phone is really stuck

Don't rush to change the settings; get the evidence first. My most handy tool is the built-in "WiFi Treasure Box" in the Mijia app. The "signal strength" check in the toolbox is:

  • people stand in the bedroom, connect their phones to WiFi, turn on signal strength monitoring
  • check the current connected device—it still shows the main router in the living room, ensuring stickiness; It shows a sub-router but the signal is below -70. That's a sub-routing alignment issue. Check out article on signal difference troubleshooting
  • note down the current RSSI reading. After the corrections, I'll come back and compare

RSSI look: Use anything below -50 , -60 is good, after -70 you start to lag, -80 is basically low HP . In my bedroom, my phone was stuck to the main router, reading -74, and I was two meters away from the router. The scene was absurd. If your Android phone doesn't have a similar tool, you can install a 'WiFi Analyzer' and watch it—just one thing.

Two areas

can be adjusted: set the sub-router first, and don't randomly copy roaming parameters

confirm stickiness, do two things in order. Move the zero-cost one first: don't place the sub-router next to the main router. The two phones are too close, and the main router signal from the phone in the bedroom is still -65, which makes it feel 'passable' and has no motivation to switch. Move the sub-router to the main router signal to naturally attenuate to -65 ~ -70, so the coverage between the two devices overlaps but doesn't overlap too much. The thicker the overlap, the easier it is for the phone to pretend to be .

then the roaming parameters in the webpage backend. Open 192.168.31.1 in your browser, go to 'WiFi Settings', scroll to the bottom, and find 'Advanced Settings' (some firmware versions are hidden in 'More Settings'), which contains transmission power and roaming options:

the widely circulated tutorials like "Change roaming threshold to -65dBm," I advise you to be cautious. Most of those parameters are in the OpenWrt firmware; Xiaomi's original firmware either doesn't expose this option or changes it is as if it hasn't been changed. I tested both machines for a while, and the most obvious change was that after adjusting the power from wall-through back to standard, the bedroom switched more frequently—the overlap thinned and the phone had to be selective.

Does

802.11r help: It can reduce switching lag, but it can't fix 'not cutting'

many people see 802.11r as the cure for roaming stickiness, I have to clarify what it does: 802.11r is "fast roaming," optimizing the handshake time at the moment of switching. Ordinary roaming phones require a complete authentication process with a new router; if the data drops for one or two seconds, video calls will go black; After turning on 11R, the process was simplified, reducing switching lag from one or two seconds to two to three hundred milliseconds.

but it doesn't change the judgment of "when to switch"—the phone feels there's no need to switch, and no matter how fast the 11R is, it won't get a chance to play. My experience after driving the 11R: The moment the phone finally decided to switch, video was almost invisible—this was a real benefit. as for making decisions earlier on phones, the 11r can't help . If you have this switch in the Xiaomi background at home (some models have it in WiFi Advanced settings, while some new firmware versions have it enabled by default), just make sure it's on—don't expect too much from it.

three situations where adjusting is pointless, just switch tactics

even after all the previous setups, it's still sticky. First, take it personally, don't stubbornly stick to the settings:

phone is too lazy. some phones' firmware roaming strategies are extremely conservative, especially for some budget phones and older Android devices. How to judge: compare another phone at the same location. If one switches and the other doesn't, then the problem is with the phone. Tip: Turn off that phone's WiFi once to force reconnection, or upgrade the system to see if the manufacturer has improved strategies. If that doesn't work, manually switch to frequently used locations—if you can't select the same SSID as the router in the WiFi details, turn off WiFi. It's rustic but effective.

the pitfall of dual-frequency integration. phones jump back and forth between 2.4G and 5G, which may look like roaming stickiness, but it's actually band-sticky. In my experience, naming bands separately can sometimes make things more confusing, as devices randomly choose among multiple SSIDs. Xiaomi's "dual-band integration" is enabled by default, leaving it as is, then enabling 5G-priority smart frequency selection (available in WiFi settings), which is easier than manual disassembly. sub-routing is wireless backhaul. the return trip consumes half the wireless resources, and the signal quality from the sub-router is poor. After evaluating the phone, it feels "switching isn't much better," so it naturally stays put. If you can lay network cables, do so; if not, move the sub-route to the main route signal at -55~-60 to secure return speed. Don't believe the marketing talk of 'you can return between two walls.'

to wrap up: My home's final parameters and inspection order

the current situation after a month of fiddling: the sub-router has been moved two meters from the main router to the end of the corridor (the main router attenuates to about -68 degrees there), with standard power, dual-band integration by default, and 11R on. Currently, it switches within two to three seconds of entering the bedroom, with video drops at the moment of switching, and the reading drops from -74 during sticking to -52. Not a single method relies on mystical parameters; it's all positions and default values.

the same troubleshooting order: first use WiFi Toolbox to get RSSI evidence to confirm sticking→ use a router to thin the overlap and overlap; → confirm 11R enabled in the background, power standard→ and still not working, then switch phones to compare and eliminate individual differences→ prioritize wireless backhaul and find a way to use wired . Roaming stickiness is 70% about placement, 30% about the phone's mood, and the specs take up a small portion—focus your energy on the right places and don't waste time on the settings page.
