How to change the LAN port IP of a Xiaomi router: The process and three things to do after changing the LAN port IP on 192.168.31.1

But the installer accidentally said, "Your router's network segment collided with our upper-layer devices, better fix it." My friend opened 192.168.31.1 and searched for a long time but couldn't find the entry point for changing the IP. Call me. Xiaomi's LAN port entry point is indeed hidden, and before modifying, you need to figure out which network segment to switch to; if you change it wrong, you won't be able to access the backend.

router's LAN port IP is the backend address you enter in your browser, and it's also the basis for assigning subnets to the devices below. Xiaomi's default is 192.168.31.1. Honestly, this 31 network segment has a much lower chance of overlapping with the mainstream 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1, so most family users don't need to change at all.

change: Xiaomi's backend entry is hidden deeper than others, but not in the mobile app

to get to the point: this setting can only be changed in the webpage backend; there's no entry in the Mijia app. At first, my friend spent ages searching through the toolbox in the Mijia app, but it was all in vain. You can operate it on your phone too—open 192.168.31.1 in your browser and use it as a web page.

I wrote the AX3000T latest firmware as I wrote. The old firmware locations differ slightly but are largely the same:

  • open 192.168.31.1, enter the management password to enter the backend (if you forgot the password, check the article on password recovery, don't rush to reset it).
  • At the top, go to 'Common Settings' → 'LAN Settings'. Some firmware versions call it 'LAN Settings'
  • find the 'LAN IP address' field. By default 192.168.31.1
  • change it to the new address you want, such as 192.168.31.2, and click 'Save'

The moment

is saved, the router will restart the network service, which lasts about ten seconds to half a minute. During this time, the page will freeze and spin, so don't keep clicking save—wait for it to jump on its own. After the jump, you'll find your browser is still stuck on the old page and can't refresh—that's normal, because the backend address has changed. You need to manually enter a new IP in the address bar, like 192.168.31.2, to re-enter.


Three things to do after

changes: missing even one will cause a monster problem

changing the LAN port IP doesn't mean saving is done; the following three steps are the key. At my friend's place, after the first change, I got stuck on the third step. His two phones just couldn't get online, and in fact, they cached the old gateway information.

the first item, confirm that the DHCP allocation range has changed accordingly. normally, Xiaomi will automatically adjust the DHCP pool to a new network segment (for example, 192.168.31.100-254), but to be safe, check the DHCP switch and address pool in the backend "LAN Settings." If your home has previously manually turned off DHCP or configured static IPs for your device, then you have to manually change all static IPs—there's no way to be lazy.

second item, reconnect all lower hanging equipment once. connected phones and computers still remember the old gateway 192.168.31.1, a fake issue appearing where WiFi is full but webpages cannot be opened — I wrote about this kind of "no network at full bar" troubleshooting in the article WiFi no internet connection. The fastest method is to "forget this network" on your phone and reconnect; the computer can disable it and then enable the wireless network card.

the third item, check the upper-level link. if this Xiaomi still has a main router (for example, used as an AP), the new network segment should be offset from the main router's segment. Also, there are specific points to how to connect the LAN port IP and which port to plug into the network cable in AP mode. What to do if you can't access the backend after correcting

errors: Two self-help methods, none of which you need to reset

most common mishaps are changing the IP to a network segment that conflicts with existing devices, or accidentally entering the wrong data, causing the backend to "lose contact" after saving. Don't panic, these two moves can basically save you :

first trick: guess the new address. you lose whatever you change. For example, if you originally want to change it to 31.2 but actually save 31.20, then try all the common options. If your phone is connected to a router, check the IP listed in the WiFi details section under "Gateway" or "Router"—that is the current backend address. This method is the most accurate.

second trick: use the Mi Home app as a backup. Although the app can't change the LAN port IP, the device detail page shows the router's current internal network address and can directly redirect to the webpage backend. The premise is that this router has previously been linked to your Mi Home account—so my habit is to bind the Mi Home first thing a new router. When something goes wrong, it's like a lifeline. if both attempts fail, then consider long-pressing Reset to restore the factory. Restoring all factory settings to zero, reconfiguring WiFi names and passwords, and reconnecting smart devices one by one—a significant cost—if you have many smart devices at home, you can imagine the scene of reconnecting the 62 devices I had in that post. So before changing your IP, write down the new address in your memo—this habit is worth a hundred times of regret.

three most frequently asked questions, answered all at once

"After changing to 31.2, can the original 192.168.31.1 still be used?" cannot. If the LAN port IP is changed, it's changed; the old address is invalid, and entering the old address in the browser either won't open or it will be accessed on another device (if your optical modem happens to be 31.1). Remember to update your favorites.

"Will changing the LAN port IP affect internet speed?" won't. This is purely a change to the address book and has nothing to do with wireless speed or bandwidth. If your internet speed isn't good, check the four points in the speed check article—don't rush to reckless treatments.

"After switching to bridge via optical modem, does the router's LAN port IP have to be changed accordingly?" not necessary, and in most cases it doesn't need to be changed. Only when the upper-layer devices occupy the 31 network segment (like a friend's operator-customized environment) should it be avoided. There are many more important aftermath matters for optical modem bridging itself.
