Is it difficult to flash OpenWrt AX3000T Xiaomi router? By following these six steps, if the flash breaks, you can always return to the official post

Xiaomi AX3000T six-step OpenWrt flash flowchart: SN code version verification, full backup, Breed flashing, firmware flashing in Breed, self-rescue level

my AX3000T has been using it for two years. I previously unlocked SSH and played with the official system for a month. I wanted to remove ads and add some plugins, but found the official firmware is just a barrier—the root gives you the root, but the software source won't, and the LuCI interface I wanted to install was completely gone. Last month, I ruthlessly restored it as ImmortalWrt (a branch of OpenWrt), and the whole trip took two hours, with the internet disconnecting for over ten minutes in between. Breaking down the process into six steps and writing it down was much smoother than the night I was flustered.

first step is to check the code: Can your machine even be flashed

AX3000T There's a trick: new versions manufactured after July 2025 quietly swapped chips, and whether you can flash depends entirely on this one item. Checking the chassis for SN codes: the ones with 49850 are older versions V1/V2, MediaTek MT7981 platform, mature flashing ecosystem, capable of flashing; The one with 64595 is the new V3, a Qualcomm platform. So far, the community hasn't caught up, so don't touch it. My car was bought in 2024, and when I checked SN, it was the old version. I've written about this before, how to distinguish old and new versions from SN codes have a complete comparison.

besides the version, one more thing to consider: is this machine currently the main router in the home? During flashing, the network would be disconnected for about ten minutes, all family devices had to reconnect, and the other half of the mesh router had to wait for the main router to finish flashing and reconfigure it. My approach is to take advantage of the weekend when my wife brings the child back to her parents' home, so if something really happens, it won't affect anyone's internet access.

your situation can you flash
SN 49850 (V1/V2) can Lots of tutorials, full firmware, Breed ready-made
SN with 64595 (V3 new version) discouraged Qualcomm platform not yet supported, waiting for community

online

Step 2: Before downloading the firmware, fix the backend first

There's an old saying in the

flashing community: backup is everything. AX3000T has 128MB of flash memory, and besides the system, there are Factory and Bdata partitions storing factory check data. Once these are lost, the official firmware can never be flashed back—not to scare people, but some people start flashing without doing a full backup, and in the end, the machine is stuck on third-party firmware.

the operation isn't complicated, I'll use the xmir-patcher tool I used before to unlock SSH: how to get it running, how to connect to the router This article covers the whole process and won't repeat it here. After connecting the device, select 4 from the main menu and select "Create full backup." After about ten minutes, a backup folder will appear in the tool directory. My device backed up just over 120MB. The only trick at this step is to save two copies: one for the computer's hard drive and one for the cloud drive. I've seen people back up and leave the folder in the tool directory, then clean up the desktop and delete the folder on the spot.

SSH At this stage, it must be connected; later farming Breed depends entirely on it. New firmware (from version 1.0.64 onward) can't access the official channel, but you can still open it using the xmir-patcher vulnerability route. Both paths are covered in the 968 article.

Step 3: Flash Breed: If you do this correctly, your router won't 'fail'

flashing third-party firmware, you need to flash a launcher first, which is like giving the router a "lifeline." Here's a turning point: OpenWrt's official U-Boot doesn't have a web interface, so if something happens, you have to disassemble the machine and use TTL cable to fix it. The community's Breed (the general-purpose MT7981 version released by hackpascal) comes with a built-in web recovery interface. As long as Breed is still around, you can save it no matter how you refresh. I know which one to pick even with my toes.

Breed Package Download the MT7981 bin file from hackpascal's release page, tens of KB. Flash into the xmir-patcher main menu and go to the 'Other Features' extension menu. There's an option to write Breed, select the file, and press Enter—the whole process takes over ten seconds. If you prefer command-based manual brushing, you can enter SSH and write it with mtd write, but the instructions included with the Breed package will ask you to check the partition table first. Just follow the instructions—if you write a single wrong letter in the partition name, it's a real brick. I recommend tool users also use the menu to steadily overcome everything.

don't rush to celebrate after swiping; inspect immediately: unplug the power, hold the SIM card ejector against the reset port without releasing, then plug in the power and hold for about fifteen seconds. When the indicator light starts flashing, release it. At this point, connect the computer network cable to the router's LAN port, manually set the computer IP to 192.168.1.2 and mask to 255.255.255.0. When the browser types 192.168.1.1—you will see the blue Breed page, and this lifebuoy is firmly welded. Remember this "power off, press reset and power on" action—it's your regret medicine for all future failures.

Step 4: Install ImmortalWrt on the Breed page

the firmware to the ImmortalWrt download site (downloads.immortalwrt.org), select mediatek / mt7981, find the entry corresponding to the Xiaomi AX3000T, and download the bin package ending with squashfs-factory—over 8MB. Distinguish between factory and sysupgrade: the first flash from Breed, make sure to use factory; Only when upgrading in the ImmortalWrt system will sysupgrade be used. If you download the wrong packet and can't swipe in, Breed will directly tell you the file is wrong, so it won't cause problems.

to the Breed page, click "Firmware Update," select the bin you just downloaded, click upload, and wait for it to run and automatically restart in three to five minutes. After restarting the computer, change the IP back to auto-fetch (or connect to its WiFi, the name will start with ImmortalWrt). Then enter the browser to 192.168.1.1—note, the management address has changed from the familiar 192.168.31.1 to 192.168.1.1. The first night, I waited on 31.1 for ten minutes before I realized it. This is similar to how backend can't be opened first check who the gateway is. If you can't get in, don't panic—most cases have the wrong address.

first time entering the system, there was no password—it was just the management interface. The first three tasks were done in order: in System, change the interface language to Chinese; in Administration, set the root password; in Network, change the LAN port IP back to your commonly used home network segment (I switched back to 31.1, so all family devices don't need to be reconfigured, so this step made the transition almost seamless at home).

Step 5 test: What does the finished AX3000T look like

spent more than half a month running, and I had memorized the numbers. Wireless speed: 5G same-home phones still negotiated at 2402Mbps, but actual downlink dropped from the official firmware's 650Mbps to 610Mbps—MTK open-source driver tuning is conservative, so I accept losing tens of Mbps; Gigabit cables run up to 941MB, no difference from official channels. The heat is a bit high. After continuously downloading heavy data for half an hour, the SoC temperature is 46°C, while the official firmware is 42°C for the same period. In summer, it's best to fix cooling issues first when placing it in a weak current box. Memory is 256MB, system no-load takes up over a hundred megabytes, more generous than I expected, and even with about ten plugins, there's still some spare space.

brings freedom: removing ad plugins reduces the number of startup ads and app splash screens at home; You can see how much data each device is running on a single screen, much more detailed than the official data statistics; Previously, relocating the old repeater in the study room had to be restricted by official firmware. Now, in OpenWrt, you can easily equip it as an AP relay, the official system's relay mode just one of many ways to play in OpenWrt. How to choose firmware, what are some common anti-deranger brick tips before flashing, OpenWrt I wrote about that article before I got into it. Beyond the model details, all the common elements are included.

there's a pitfall that must be revealed before you start: OpenWrt and Xiaomi's official Mesh protocol are not interoperable. In my bedroom, there's a sub-router with the main router paired with Mesh. The night the main router finished flashing ImmortalWrt, the sub-router immediately lost contact—it recognized Xiaomi's private protocol and didn't recognize third-party systems. Two options: either flash the sub-router to ImmortalWrt and roam at 802.11r/s (setup is a bit complicated but stable), or don't flash the main router and just wait for the official firmware. If you only have one router at home, you don't have this problem—just swipe casually.

Step 6: Leave a backup plan: it only takes ten minutes to get back to the official account

third-party swipes don't mean you can't return to the official post. On the Breed page (still the method where power is turned off and press Reset), select "Firmware Update," insert the official miwifi firmware bin downloaded from Xiaomi's official website, and in ten minutes it will return to factory settings. WiFi name and password will be restored to default, and remember to refill your broadband account. The first thing to do after returning to the official team is to turn off automatic upgrades—upgrading the official firmware might block all your backdoors. Next time you want to reflash, you'll have to start from scratch. the rules and risks of firmware upgrades written before, just follow them. If you ever want to release a second-hand version, you can return to the official account and then unbind it—it's much more respectable than selling with a belly full of plugins.

what counts as a real brick? If you can't even enter Breed, it's usually because the partition was written wrong when farming Breed. At that point, you have to disassemble the machine and use TTL cable to fix it. My old AC2100 went through this step back in the day. TTL complete flashing and another way to fix the yellow light slowly flashing both have ready-made records. If you really encounter it, don't panic—check the light signals before you act. As long as you follow this order and keep backups, you probably won't need those two in your lifetime.

one more thing to say: the CR8809 or similar carrier-customized version has a different approach. You have to unlock the official firmware first. the full slot of the custom version I've written about it elsewhere. The right mindset for flashing is to treat backups as life, Breed as a boat, and use all the tools already available. The chance of failures is much lower than you think.
