Can you buy a second-hand router on Xianyu? I've owned four units—slag, putty machines, and old antiques with hundreds of megapixels, no matter how cheap, should be avoided

last year, when I supplemented nodes for an IoT private network, I bought a Telecom custom Redmi CR8809 for 95 yuan, and since then, I've been a bit out of control. So far, four second-hand routers have entered my home, one after another, for a total of 443 yuan. If you bought a brand new car at the original price back then, just the AX6000 alone would cost 489 yuan. The second-hand market is indeed viable, and the cheap ones are indeed cheap, but there are also many pitfalls. This article will clearly explain the tricks I've stepped on and almost stepped on, all at once.
put the account here: four machines, four different fates
show the ledger for the four units first:
| model | the final price | the origin | current position |
| Redmi CR8809 | 95 | Telecom custom retired phone | flashed with standard firmware and dedicated IoT network |
| Redmi AX6000 | 260 | personal personal devices | as a backup main tool for testing |
| Tengda AC10 | 58 | helped his cousin buy | his family used it as an AP |
| Xiaomi 4C | 30 | personal personal phone | dedicated for flashing and practicing devices |
three out of these four are thriving quite well. CR8809 after flashing the reference firmware feeding more than a dozen smart devices without disconnecting for over a month; The Redmi AX6000 is the one AX3000T and I tested for three days and its condition looks like it has never been used; The 30 yuan Xiaomi 4C is just a for practice and tuition, so you don't mind if you mess it up. The only failure was my cousin's AC10. The V6.0 hardware couldn't be flashed, but fortunately he only treated it as AP and didn't mess with it, so it was fine.
Why is
second-hand worth it? Two reasons. First, mid-stage WiFi 6 machines drop by half in price in just two or three years, and the AX6000 performance at 260 yuan is just there; Second, the discontinued miracle phone is backed by flash enthusiasts. My retired Redmi AC2100 is listed on Xianyu for 60 yuan, and over a dozen buyers asked overnight, all asking, "Can I redo the phone?" The old machine you have isn't as worthless as you think.
but the accounts had to be settled on both sides. Brand new AX3000T always costs 129 yuan, a 95-yuan second-hand CR8809 saves only 34 yuan, and you have to gamble that the SN code is an old chip—I remember the lesson from AX3000T of chip replacement products. When the price difference is less than fifty yuan, second-hand isn't cost-effective—that's something I realized later.
first type, don't touch it: slag. The Phicomm K3 that cost 1999 yuan is now 50 yuan and no one wants it
The
2017 wave of 'blockchain routers' left behind a batch of slag, which is still floating on Xianyu. The most famous is the Phicomm K3: priced at 1999 yuan, relying on "zero-yuan purchase" cashback to attract new users, with 349 yuan back in the first month. It sounds like a free pick, but in reality, it was a fund scheme. It crashed in 2018 and was investigated by the police. After the crash, the K3 dropped to around 50 yuan on Xianyu and no one took it. Within the community, it was nicknamed the "Oil Leaker"—the capacitor leaks from that batch were a batch-specific problem, and even manual repairs couldn't finish it.
the same pitfall, Ji Router was also involved. P2P partners were shut down, and with Phicom's collapse, the company's cash flow was cut off and it went bankrupt. As for the leftover from the MT7621 platform on newifi3, players are now flashing their devices to build mesh systems, which is one of the rare second springs among mining scraps. But that's the player route, and it's different from saving trouble for home graphics.
Identifying
slag is actually not difficult; if three features match two, you should avoid it
| features | what they look like |
| same model is listed in batches and dozens of identical models are listed, with avatars and descriptions all copy-pasted | |
| titles with flashed | "flashed," "jailbroken," or "SSH unlocked" are usually due to batch flashing |
| where the price and condition are inversely | flagship specs, brand new condition, Yet the price is even lower than the base version |
a normal household retired router is installed one by one, with its original packaging and power supply, and the title says "Idle for Personal Use." Batch sizes, well-brushed, cheap ones—each one tells you about the machine's high-intensity past.
second type: Machines of unknown origin, all the configurations are shadows of their previous owners
cybersecurity company ESET released a report in 2023 stating that many network devices on the second-hand market had no clear data before being resold. The same goes for routers—if you bring a device with 'memories' into your home, it's like inviting the previous owner inside. The residues I worry about most:
remote management is still on, the previous owner's mobile app can access your home backend anytime, and changing passwords and kicking devices is a trivial matter; DNS has been passively tampered with; every webpage you open first passes through someone else's server; If the UPnP mapping list contains several forwarding rules for high-level ports, your device has been opened to the outside; There are also more private things like blacklisting and broadband account passwords. I explained all this in the about routers being hacked, and no matter how thoroughly you check used devices, it's never too much.
there's another category that needs to be discussed separately: demo machines and prototypes. The features are excessively new condition, very low prices, no power supply or packaging, and the SN stickers show signs of peeling and re-application. These machines are powered on year-round and displayed for new, but no one knows how many hours they've been running inside.
the first thing you get is not broadband but factory resumption. Mercury machine's backend one-touch reset , Tenda's reset button is the same as WPS's, so don't overpress it. Xiaomi devices have an extra step: if the seller doesn't unbind them in Mijia, you can't link them to your account when you take them home. In this case, you either have the seller delete the device remotely or file an appeal. Tenda's previously linked devices the same hassle. Asking "Have you unbound it" before buying can save you a week of disputes.
retired commercial aircraft also fall into this category. Machines running 24×7 in internet cafes and shops, with yellowed shells, soot on the vents, and a strong smell of smoke nearby—just skip these kinds of cases. High temperature is the number one killer of capacitors. Every 10°C increase in ambient temperature cuts capacitor lifespan in half. routers keep on capacitors, and putty machine capacitors are already at their last lull.
Third type: Never touch the old antique of the Baizhao Mouth. No matter how much you spend on the 93 trillion threshold, you're losing money
now broadband starts at 300 Mbps, and when a 100 Mbps machine plugs in, it caps at 93 Mbps. No matter how fast the broadband is, it can't get through. These machines are common on Xianyu for 30 to 50 yuan. They look cheap, but in reality, they are welding the ceiling to your home.
How do
recognize it? Look at three places. Looking at the year, before 2015, WiFi 4 devices basically had 100 Mbps ports; Second, check the model suffix: Mercury D191 and D191G differ by one letter , resulting in a tenfold difference in network port speed; Third, negotiate. When you plug in a computer network cable and the connection speed shows 100Mbps, that's the 100Mbps port. Only if it shows 1000Mbps does it pass. This method is even more accurate than checking the parameter page. For a Xiaomi 4A with two phones under one name, this method is even more important for real-world testing.
Five steps to inspect the machine: from unpacking to hanging overnight, don't skip a step
Step one: Don't power on the package just yet. Flip through the shell and copy down the three-string code: model, hardware version, SN. model and hardware version determine which batch the machine belongs to; the firmware of machines with different hardware versions of the same model is not interchangeable. If you can check the warranty for SN, check it: ASUS's official website will show the warranty status by entering SN. Xiaomi can also call 400-100-5678 to report SN. If your phone costs a few hundred yuan, the warranty expires, but what if it's still under warranty? After copying the code, smell it; if there is a burnt smell, apply for a return directly.
Step two: Power on and watch the lights to access the backend. Mercury's SYS lights have completely opposite rules: the old model flashes slowly per second, while the new model stays on steadily; Tengda, on the other hand, always dodging means you're alive, but staying at all is deadly. Once the lights are right, go backstage; if you can't get in, first follow the unlocked routine and queue once—don't rush to sentence to death.
Step 3: Restore the factory modification management password—a combo of moves. Factory wipe everything from the previous owner, then change the management password to your own , and set it separately from the WiFi password. This step is the bottom line of safety; skipping the front is all for nothing.
Step 4, go through the status page. WAN port IP, memory usage, firmware version—all of them match what this model should have. How to read the status page I've written about it in detail. Buying a second-hand phone is like giving the machine a job check—if it takes up more than 80% of the memory, don't keep it even if it's cheap.
step five: hang it overnight. During the day, I let it download at full speed; at night, I connected all my smart devices at home to run it. The next day, I first checked the casing temperature—within 45 degrees Celsius is normal, but above 55 degrees it should be weighed—then check the device list to make sure none of the disconnections dropped. A machine that couldn't last through the night still had its return window open.
Wrap-up: Who is suitable for buying second-hand, and who should buy new ones early
| What's your situation | I suggest |
| tinkering and want to flash the device and play with a side router | charged. Any second-hand items except mining slag are all valuable |
| add a node for Mesh, set up a dedicated network for IoT, | collect |
| old machine jobs just right for those wanting to practice but worried about scrapping main machines | charging 30 yuan each, just make |
| the main device at home is safe. If it breaks, the whole family loses internet | don't add to the mix. Adding 80 yuan to buy a brand new with warranty |
| you don't want to study models and specs | don't bother with it. You can't stick with these five steps of machine inspection |
my take: the fun of a second-hand router is spending 50 yuan on a 150-yuan thing—saving money and investing time and judgment. What you want is peace of mind—a brand-new machine with a three-year warranty and a worry-free sleep; If you get a bit of a taste, the 443 yuan for four units is actually more cost-effective than you imagined.
