changed the WiFi password for her Tenda AX12 at her mother-in-law's house. This time, she brought up something new: the camera at the door, the app keeps watching replays and spinning around. When I asked, the free cloud storage had expired, so if she hadn't paid, she could only watch the live footage. I remembered that my home's direct IPv6 connection for playback was pretty effective, so I thought I'd also turn on V6 for her router, connect the camera directly to the home without cloud chatting. But when I entered the Tengda backend, I found that this page looks completely different from IPv6 settings my Mercury. The switch is easy to find, but the WAN network connection below is up to my own choice—I was stuck with this on my first trip.

first take a minute to check if the broadband side has IPv6

This step doesn't matter which brand of router you use; it depends entirely on whether the carrier provides it. Connect your phone to your home WiFi, open the test-ipv6.com browser, and wait about ten seconds. If your home WiFi doesn't work on the test, don't rush to complain about broadband. Most likely, the router is off, but the broadband side is on. If you want to confirm again, test your phone's data again. If you get a result under data (10 points), it means your local carrier's network V6 is active.

If you can't measure it even under traffic conditions, it means the area isn't covered, and even if the router is on, it's pointless. In recent years, most newly installed broadbands have V6. Ten-year-old broadbands can be shut down and restarted by the optical modem, and sometimes the address will disappear on its own. My mother-in-law's broadband was installed in 2021, the same type you can use with your eyes closed.

tendawifi.com into the backend, switch it under "More Settings"

Connect your phone or computer to Tenda's WiFi, enter tendawifi.com in your browser, or directly enter 192.168.0.1 and enter the same door. Enter the management password (forgot to check the password I wrote about Tenda's initial password before, the new and old models have different approaches). Last time I changed my WiFi password I used this door to change my WiFi password—so familiar.

Tenda's new interface, the homepage is a row of large cards, with WiFi settings and guest network all openly displayed, but IPv6 is not on the homepage—click "More Settings" in the bottom right corner and scroll down to see an IPv6 menu. Once inside, just one switch—turn it on, and this step is easy.

the real dividing line is the "Networking Method" section under the switch. On Mercury, just keep it automatic. Tenda offers three options: PPPoEv6, DHCPv6, and static IPv6. Which one you choose determines whether you get the address immediately after opening the door or wait for a long time with nothing.

How to choose

WAN method: First, check who is dialing your home

mnemonic is simple: optical modem dialing DHCPv6, router dialing PPPoEv6. The method is simple—during installation, the technician entered the broadband account password into the optical modem. If your router's WAN port receives an internal address like 192.168.1.x, this means the modem is dialing (routing mode). Nowadays, the default home broadband setup is almost always like this. For this case, choose DHCPv6: the optical modem takes the v6 prefix from the carrier, and the router passes it down in segments from the modem, passing it layer by layer.

Conversely, if your home uses the optical modem to change the bridge and the broadband account and password are entered into the router, then v6 is also managed by the router. Choose PPPoEv6, and the account and password will be exactly the same as the v4 set, identical without having to open it separately from the carrier.

I was at my mother-in-law's house, and this was exactly what I was told: when I checked and it was set to PPPoEv6 by default, I thought, 'Let's go with it.' After saving and waiting five minutes, the WAN port v6 address bar was completely empty. Later, I realized her home was using the optical modem for dialing, so I switched to DHCPv6 and saved. In less than a minute, a long string of addresses starting with 240e was already displayed. If no one had pointed this out, most people would have searched blindly elsewhere.

Where to verify after

the first place, on Tenda's backend "Network Status" page, click the router icon in the middle, scroll down to the bottom, and check if the IPv6 address is a long string starting with 240e, 2408, or 2409. China Telecom 240e, Unicom 2408, China Mobile 2409—each has a different prefix, so any of the prefixes you see are correct.

second time, I connected to the home WiFi and turned it on again. test-ipv6.com, I scored a perfect 10 after testing. Third, open the WiFi details on your phone and scroll down; if the IPv6 field has an address, it counts. If you match one of the three places, it means it's correct.

two details to note: sending a prefix to v6 isn't an instant reply—wait two or three minutes before making a conclusion; You need to disconnect your phone and reconnect to WiFi again, otherwise it clings to the old address and looks like it didn't turn on successfully.

the backend doesn't even have an IPv6 menu? The old Tenda comes in two

if you search through "More Settings" and still find the IPv6 option, don't assume your device is not working yet; there are two scenarios. The first method is old firmware: go to Tenda's official website's service support page, search for firmware by model to download, extract the bin file, then go back to the backend, go to 'More features→ System Management→ Software Upgrade → Local Upgrade', and select the file to upgrade. For example, the familiar AC10 has a new firmware with IPv6 on the V6.0 hardware version's official website, and after upgrading the menu, it appears. When downloading, always match the hardware version. The V1 and V6 packages are not interchangeable; flashing the wrong one can cause bricking. This the firmware rule on the official website I explained this in detail when writing about Mercury. It's one principle.

the second option is tricky: machines from the AC9 era never had IPv6 in the official firmware from the start, and even after digging the firmware from the official website, it still didn't work. On the Enshan forum, there was a post about forcing a v6 version for flashing ASUS firmware on the AC9. It works, but that's just a hassle for the community. Ordinary people shouldn't get involved with this trick. If you really need a v6, spending a hundred or two hundred yuan to buy a new model is much more hassle-free than flashing the device.

the three pitfalls I've stepped into have nothing to do with the switch itself

Pitfall 1: save the moment the whole family goes offline for a minute or two After saving via WAN, the router needs to restart the service, WiFi disconnects and reconnects, causing devices like vacuum cleaners and cameras to disconnect and slowly crawl back again. It took nearly ten minutes for my mother-in-law's house camera to restart, and during that time, the app seemed to malfunction. Pick a break at home when no one is in a video conference or playing games before making a move.

pitfall 2: the address is hard to find and first checks the optical modem . If the WAN method is confirmed to be correct, the v6 address is still empty. Most likely, the optical modem "intercepted" v6 in routing mode on its own layer and didn't let it go down. Go to the optical modem backend and turn on the IPv6 switch on the LAN side—the backend is the same as the one you enter public network IP. Go to network settings and find LAN side v6; If you really can't find it, take the path of switching the optical modem to bridge, and then V4 and V6 will be managed entirely by the router.

Pitfall 3: firewall blocks all incoming traffic by default . This is a good thing. Under V6, every device in your home has a public network address, relying entirely on the router's firewall to guard the door. But if you connect the camera or NAS from outside, you have to allow the corresponding port in Tenda's backend "Security Features"; otherwise, the symptoms are address ping but pages refusing to open. The logic is the same as forwarding ports under IPv4, except the v6 address is already public and doesn't need forwarding—just one step away from letting it pass.

is it worth driving it? Honestly,

mother-in-law's house now connects directly to the camera app, and you can replay and drag without spinning, which is the most direct benefit. If you have a NAS at home, V6 direct connection can run full uplink bandwidth, which is an order of magnitude faster than free penetration. Let me be clear

the harsh truth: if you run V6 without boosting speed, 300 Mbps is still 300 Mbps; Gamers shouldn't get their hopes up—most game servers are still on V4, so NAT types are as strict as they can be. Some older devices have a problem with the v6 protocol stack; when enabled, the app spins in circles. Just shut down the v6 of that device alone, without having the whole family involved.
