Does the landline phone have no sound after the telecom optical modem is changed to a bridge? Don't rush to call the master. I missed copying the voice WAN line once.

There is no sound from the fixed line after the telecom optical modem is bridged: Step chart of voice WAN disconnection troubleshooting and parameter retrieval

My dad's broadband was upgraded to Gigabit last year. I conveniently changed the optical modem to a bridge, and the router dialed up. The speed was measured at 940 Mbit/s, and the whole family was satisfied. My mother called the next morning and said that the landline phone was silent. She picked up the receiver and it was quiet. There was no dial tone. My first reaction was that the phone was broken, and my second reaction was that the phone line was loose. I checked both ends and found nothing. It was only at night that I realized that the problem was with me - the night I changed the bridge connection, I also changed the WAN connection that the optical modem manages the phone.

Landline phone is not a big deal or a small matter. The elderly at home are accustomed to landline phones, and express delivery, community, and relatives all call this number. If the number is not available for two days, they will be blinded. This article clearly describes the mistakes I made that time and the steps I took to remedy the situation for three families. Taking a quick look before changing the bridge can save a trip to the master’s house.

Make it clear first: Why does the phone follow optical modem?

The landline phone provided by the broadband installation no longer uses telephone lines, but uses optical fiber. There is a slogan on the back of the optical modem that says PHONE Or draw a phone icon, plug the phone into it, pack the voice signal into data packets, and go out through the optical fiber along with the broadband. The lingo of this set of things is called VoIP. In the optical modem, it is a dedicated WAN connection. The business type is "voice". It is two lines side by side with the "Internet" WAN that manages the Internet.

What are you doing when changing the bridge? Change the "Internet access" WAN from routing mode to bridge and let the router dial up. It sounds like only the Internet connection has been touched, but there are two pitfalls in actual operation that will cause disaster for the voice line. First, some people thought the menu was messy before the change, so they directly restored the factory settings. The voice WAN was configured and distributed in the computer room during installation, and it disappeared as soon as it left the factory. ; Second, when changing the WAN connection, my hand shook and I deleted the voice message or changed the type. I was in the second category. I was looking at a row of connections and deleted the wrong one. Checking the phone jack and voice registration on the phone side, I How to connect the landline phone to the optical modem phone port I have written a whole article here, so this article will not repeat that path.

So the bridge itself doesn't kill the call. What kills the phone is factory reset and deleting the wrong entries. The broadband is still available and the phone has no sound. 90% of the time it is one of these two things. Judgment is also simple: When I pick up the handset, there is no sound at all, and if there is an indicator light next to the optical modem phone port, it does not light up. Basically, the voice line is disconnected, not the phone.

By the way, how do you tell whether your cat is in bridge mode or routing mode? If you are not sure, check it out. How to determine whether the optical modem is in bridge or routing mode , the WAN port of the router gets the public IP and dials, which is undoubtedly bridging.

First step to remedy: Go to the background to view the WAN connection table

Browser 192.168.2.1 , log in with the useradmin account on the sticker. Look for the "Network" or "WAN Connection" page. I was on 192.168.2.1 What is the use of a row of menus in the background? As mentioned here, this page is generally visible to ordinary accounts. After entering, there is a table with one row and one connection. Focus on the two columns.: Service type and binding port.

For families that have completed bridging normally, there should still be a "voice" or "VOIP" type connection in this table, and the status is connected. If you see that there is only one Bridge Internet connection left in the table and the voice connection is missing, or the voice connection is still there but the status is disconnected, you have found the reason. At my dad’s house, the voice message was completely gone. I deleted it, completely.

If you don't understand this page, don't panic. The information here only requires you to confirm "whether the voice entry is present or not, and whether it is broken or not." You don't need to understand every field. After confirming, you can proceed to the next step. The remaining work is mainly to retrieve the parameters.

If you forget your useradmin password and can't get in, go to my article first. How to retrieve the optical modem useradmin password if I forget it? , don’t get stuck on the login box and lose three times in a row to be locked out for ten minutes.

Where do the parameters come from?: The groups I missed copying

The parameters filled in the voice WAN connection were configured and distributed by the master in the computer room during installation, so you can't guess them yourself. I later learned to do at least one of the three things before changing the bridge connection: take a picture of the screen, copy the parameters, and guide the configuration. These are the main groups of parameters:

If it has been deleted and nothing has been copied, it is not a dead end. The two roads are ranked from lowest to highest cost. Article 1: I have written about configuration backup using just a few clicks. How to export and backup the configuration file of Telecom Optical Mode , if you download a conf after installing the phone, all the voice parameters are in it, you can find someone who can read it and explain it. Article 2: I called 10000 and reported "No dial tone on the landline" and asked the technician to reissue the voice service. After the deployment, the optical modem will rebuild the voice WAN by itself, and the phone will be alive. Generally, there is no need to change the equipment or visit the door.

Don't be embarrassed to make this call. The voice service data is stored in the computer room, and reconstruction is a matter of a few clicks in the background for them. If you fill in the SIP address in the WAN connection blindly, it won't work even if you fill it in ten thousand times. You don't have the password at all.

I restored the voice entry but it still doesn’t work.: three checkpoints

After the voice WAN is rebuilt, there is a high probability that the phone calls will be restored immediately. If you are still alive, click on these three points and look at them one by one. They are all things that I actually encountered when I was helping people to remedy the situation.:

First, don’t plug the phone into the wrong port. There is a row of openings behind the optical modem, and the phone needs to be plugged in. PHONE That one, don’t get in the way LAN Go inside. There is no response from the LAN port plug-in machine, it looks exactly like it is broken. My cousin did this. I even accompanied him remotely to check the parameters for half an hour, and finally found out that it was plugged into the wrong port. Which mouth is for what? I'm here How to connect the landline phone to the optical modem phone port I painted them one by one.

The second one is registration status. If there is "Registration Status" or "Voice Registration" on the Voice WAN page or status page, it shows that it has been registered. It shows that it is not registered, which means that the account password or server address is not correct. This is not something you can fix. Go back to the computer room and continue to look for number 10000.

Third, don’t mix bridging changes and rescue calls. First, activate the voice and enable phone calls, and then move on to bridging. Only change one variable at a time. Last time, a friend did two things together. There was no sound on the phone, and the broadband couldn't dial the number. In the end, I couldn't figure out which step caused the problem, and I couldn't figure it out even if I rolled it back. The complete sequence of changing the bridge is written in How to change the bridge connection of Telecom optical modem , the beginning of that article emphasized taking pictures of the WAN connection table first, the reason is what happened this time.

One-time insurance before changing to bridging

Finally, I tightened up the safety measures. They were all cost-free. It took ten minutes to do it on the day of changing the bridge. The voice line was basically unharmed.:

Take a picture of the screen or copy down the entire WAN connection table. Don’t miss a single line, especially the VLAN and service type in the voice line. Import a configuration file and save it in the computer. The conf mentioned earlier is it. When making changes, only touch the "Internet" item. Change the service type from Route to Bridge or add a new Bridge. Do not touch the voice item. The idea of restoring to factory settings should be avoided before activating the bridge connection. If you must use the factory settings, save the above two things first.

Another thing that's easy to forget: There will be a batch of devices that need to be reconfigured that night after the bridge change is completed. I will write about WiFi related matters in How to connect telecom optical modem to two routers inside. Only the phone will not give you any reminder, it will not light up the red light, it will just die quietly, and you will not find out until someone hits you the next day. So that night after the change, I picked up the receiver and listened to a dial tone. It only took two seconds. This is my fixed action now.

End in this order:

step do what illustrate
1 Pick up the handset and listen to the dial tone If there is no sound, check the phone jack first, then check the voice WAN
2 Enter 192.168.2.1 See WAN connection table Confirm whether the voice entry is present or disconnected
3 If there is a backup, go to the backup. If not, call 10,000. I can’t guess the voice parameters myself.
4 Check the registration status after rebuilding Only if you have registered will you be considered successful. If you have not registered, return to the computer room.

The station at my dad's house finally dialed 10,000. The next day, the master reissued the phone number in the background, and the landline phone was alive without any money. The price I paid was staying up one extra night and being scolded by my mother for three days, "What kind of pattern did you change?" Now his broadband is still bridged, and phone calls can still be made. The two lines go their own way, and no one is in the way.
