last year I helped a colleague upgrade the bridge, and on the fourth day after the change, ITMS pushed me back late at night. He called me and asked: Was the VLAN 45 or 51 back then? Which port is the group broadcast tied? I couldn't answer a single word. Things that rely solely on memory will be blurred after just three days. Learning from mistakes, now before setting up any settings on the light modem, I first export a copy of the background configuration files to my computer. This feature is hidden in the backend menu, not very noticeable, but I dare say it's the most worthwhile button in the entire optical modem backend.

what is stored in a conf: broadband account, super password, LOID all inside

The configuration file of the

optical modem packages all the current settings of this machine into a file of several hundred KB. Don't underestimate this document—it contains more valuable information than you might think. The first time I exported and checked item by item, at least these were the following:

  • broadband dial-up account and password, which are the same set you enter in the router's PPPoE. If you forget it, you don't have to call customer service or wait for the
  • telecomadmin super password. The advanced settings key is a hassle
  • LOID lose the registration code and password, and when replacing the modem, you can use it to re-register in ITMS
  • The IPTV connection VLAN value and bound port, the lifeline of the bridging party
  • WiFi name and password, voice channel parameters, and the remote management configuration of the TR-069

Have you noticed? These are exactly the hardest things to recover when something goes wrong. Forgot your broadband account and still followed the to check your account went through the business hall app, forgot the super password and online tutorials were confused, and if you copied the wrong VLAN, IPTV would just go black. And once this document is saved, it's all in your hands. I once wrote an article router configuration backup . The config.bin of routers is the same, and the conf for optical modems is similar, but far fewer people know about it.

pour cold water on the matter: it's mostly encrypted, not a notepad

Don't think that just by double-clicking to open the password after exporting, you need to distinguish between the two generations of machines. For the old optical modem, the HG8245 batch exported backupsettings.conf in plaintext. Open Notepad and search telecomadmin, and the password pops up directly. All the tutorials back then taught it this way. But in the past two years, the Tianyi Gateway 3.0 and 4.0 I've built have exported encrypted files: Huawei calls it hw_ctree.xml, ZTE uses its own format, and Notepad opens with garbled text.

online circles have corresponding decryption tools, such as Huawei's configuration encryption and decryption tools and ZTE's unpacking tools. To be honest, this is a folk remedy: tools come from various sources, check the parameters of your own equipment and see if it's not a big problem, and don't stuff unfamiliar products into the production environment. My own usage is much simpler—no decryption, just kept as is. Because the purpose of a backup is that if something happens, you can recall it, not understand it normally.

know which generation you're holding, export it, and open it at a glance: the full screen of garbled text means the encrypted version, while the plaintext version can read the English parameter names. The plaintext version needs to add a word — it's like a password notebook containing broadband passwords and super passwords. Never send it to the group chat asking someone to check the configuration, and you need to set an extraction code when sending cloud drives. The encrypted version doesn't have that concern; anyone who reads it looks garbled. I usually change the filename to 'Model + Date' on the day of export, for example, F7015T-0919.conf, and import one copy before and after the bridge. If any issues arise, check the date and find which step it was imported.

two ways to export: useradmin takes a chance, telecomadmin secures

first way, first use the regular useradmin account listed on the sticker to log in to the backend and look around. The address is based on the sticker. Our Tianyi gateway here is 192.168.2.1, some provinces use 192.168.1.1, and some even include port 8080. After logging in, open the "Management" and "System Tools" menus. Some models leave a button for downloading configuration files for regular accounts. Click the browser to save the disk. This is a lucky case and it takes one minute.

most new models reduce regular accounts to just a visible status, then take the second path: super password log in to Telecomadmin. How did I get this account? I wrote about the process in this article two layers of backend port mapping. I got the 'Manage → Device Management → Configuration Management' in the backend section. My ZTE F7015T is right here; Some firmware HS8145V Huawei is placed in the "System Tools→ Configuration Files, with some different names, only a few menus, so you can flip through them one by one without missing anything. Click to export configuration file, and you'll get hundreds of KB.

ZTE machines, there's a backup feature: there's a 'USB Recovery Configuration' in the background. Plug the USB drive into the optical modem's USB port, check it, and you can directly copy the configuration to the USB drive. If one day you can't access the webpage backend and don't have a computer on hand, this trick can be a lifesaver. Once you get the files, I suggest storing them in two places: one on your computer, and one on your cloud drive or WeChat for yourself. If the modem is physically damaged, the chances of losing both are much lower.

super admin backend has another pitfall that can easily be frustrated: some Tianyi gateway super admin interface changes without clicking save after modification are basically wasted changes. The rule is: after making changes, go to the 'Manage → Maintenance' page and click 'Maintenance Ends' to make the changes. Just close the browser or unplug the device, then restart and discard all changes. The first time I deleted the TR-069 connection, I was stuck here. I clearly saved it, but when I restarted, the link was still there—I almost thought I remembered it wrong. So the complete order for super admins to get started is: export conf→ set up→ save→ maintenance ends→ restart verification—don't skip a step.

How to recover on factory recovery day: One-click import is better than manual rework

this backup was truly useful on the day of the accident. Accidentally pressing reset, restoring factory clearance, reselling, or trying to return to the starting point after the bridge modification fails—these are all its main domain. the night I accidentally pressed reset, I copy LOID, copy VLAN, reconfigure WiFi, and did three hours of manual labor; If you have a conf, import it and restart the machine for two or three minutes; then dial-up, WiFi, and IPTV VLANs will all return to their original locations.

restore and export on the same "Configuration Management" page, select Import Configuration File, then select Backup and then restart. After importing, don't rush to finish work. Check these three items: On the status page, check the receiving light power between -8 and -27. Connect WiFi to the old name with your phone, and check whether IPTV can enter the channel list. Only when all three are correct can it be considered true recovery. A typical sign of import failure is when the progress bar restarts on its own halfway through and still starts up with an empty configuration, usually due to a significant firmware version. At this point, don't repeatedly drive the machine; just follow the instructions and manually for the safest approach.

No matter how good conf is, it fails across models, and the numbers on the note can always be recognized.
