What is the purpose of a router's USB port? Hard drive insertion, 4G emergency, download device—I've tried each of these four methods

After browsing forums, I realized the bottleneck isn't the mouth, but the CPU—SMB file sharing consumes computing power, and router processors are busy handling data forwarding during the day, leaving little for sharing. So don't expect the 3.0 port to run maximally; a 200-300 yuan machine running 15MB/s is considered a normal performance.

in short: set your speed expectations correctly first. The value of this port lies in the fact that the router is powered on 24/7, not in benchmark scores.
There are three ways to identify
ports, which can be done in a minute: check the color—blue is 90% likely 3.0; if you find the color unreliable, check the router's specs page and see the interface section is clearly listed; if you're too lazy to check, plug in an external hard drive, and the backend will see the recognized protocol speed. The 2.0 port will obediently show 480Mbps. There's an even more important piece of information on the spec page—the list of feature supports. Having a port doesn't mean having features, so don't skip this step.
Method 1: Plug in a hard drive and turn it into a file server, so the whole family can store
the most common usage. Plug in a USB drive or external hard drive, open file sharing in the background (ASUS in "USB-related apps," Xiaomi in file sharing near "Common Settings"), and every device at home can connect: automatic phone photo backup, installation package on computer, or TV playing movies directly on the hard drive.
format is the first pitfall for beginners. Many machines only read NTFS, so when plugged in, they can read but not write; ext4 is the most versatile, but Windows doesn't recognize it; you have to install software when plugging it in. My current habit is to solder a hard drive onto the router without unplugging it repeatedly, choosing the format the machine recognizes best, which is worry-free. don't get any illusions about speed. The table in front is the ceiling—more than enough for storing photos, watching videos, and sharing documents. If you want to use it as a workspace to edit videos, give up early—that's NAS's job.
there's also a power supply pit, worth mentioning. Some 2.5-inch mechanical drives can't be driven by routers; after a few clicks, they stop there, and the hard drive repeatedly restarts and damages the drive. In this situation, there are two options: replace it with a hard drive enclosure with external power supply, or simply use a USB drive or SSD enclosure, which consumes much less power and can be driven in one drive. That's how my old mechanical drive was replaced by cold backup.
Tip 2: 4G internet card as backup broadband, saved me on typhoon nights
I think this is the most valuable way to play. In ASUS's backend "External Network → Dual Line," select the second WAN as USB, set the mode to "failover," plug in a 4G internet card or portable WiFi, and a backup line becomes "Failover" when the main broadband is cut off, the router automatically switches to 4G, and the broadband resumes automatically.

Old firmware relies on network detection, switching only after continuous detection failures on the main line, with default 12 failures, plus the detection interval, taking about a minute to switch; The new firmware has Auto USB Backup WAN. After disconnecting, plug in your portable WiFi and it disconnects in about 10 seconds. When you switch, the whole house will disconnect for dozens of seconds. When gaming, it still drops, but for surveillance and remote access scenarios where "disconnect and lose contact," it's a lifesaver.

two reminders: get a pure IoT card or a low-rent data card for emergency data; If you don't have a SIM card at home, plug your Android phone into the router's USB port and enable "USB Network Sharing" to still serve as a backup WAN. This is an officially supported feature—free access.
There are also considerations for choosing
cards. IoT cards are 9.9 yuan per year, which are heavily overstated and prone to running away. In emergency scenarios, it's not a big problem to get cheap, but don't spend too much money; The more serious way is to get a secondary SIM and keep it on your portable WiFi, keep your number for a few yuan a month, and buy data as needed. My principle is one thing: the cost of backup lines must not exceed the value of their life-saving cycles. Items that are used less than twice a year are sufficient and sufficient.
Tip 3: Hang a hard drive as a download device, hang it up before bed and watch it in the morning
router runs 24/7 ×, naturally suited for downloading and doing "leave it hanging and neglected" tasks. Attach a hard drive; ASUS machines come with a built-in download function. download disc paired with a DLNA media server is even smoother: just turn on the router, and the TV's media center can directly play movies from the hard drive, without transferring or copying from your computer. After downloading, it streams all in one go.
boundaries are also clear: routers can download and broadcast, but they don't understand poster walls, can't transcode, and have rudimentary subtitle management. By the way, OpenWrt players can also extend the system root directory to a USB drive (extroot), allowing plugins to be installed as many as they want. But as I mentioned in my on flash and memory, the cost-performance ratio is average, so beginners shouldn't get involved.
Method 4: Print the server, and a few other uses
you have a USB printer at home, plug it into a router and turn it into a network printer. The whole family can run desktop laptops without having a dedicated computer running for support. ASUS and Netgear machines come with this feature natively; Xiaomi doesn't have official firmware, but I found three practical alternative routes and wrote them in the about printers—just copy them.

Plug the USB small fan into the router port and blow directly on the device; cooling the low-voltage box in summer is rustic but useful; Add a power bank and a USB-to-DC cable, and if there's a power out, just bring the router and optical modem—there's usually still power in the broadband data center—the two little ones at home have constant power supply, so the whole house can have WiFi, and as long as your phone connects, you can still get online. It's much better than just struggling around in the dark. This is a DIY approach: you need to buy the right voltage and current, or you'll burn the machine if you get it wrong.
the most regrettable thing is the TP-Link machine: the mainstream home models on sale either have no port at all or have ports but don't provide any backend functionality.
