But I casually checked her router's backend and found a more common pitfall: the connection mode is set to "on-demand," which is the main culprit behind many households' inconsistent internet speeds and occasional video viewing lag. years ago, when broadband was rolled up, operators gave a "cat"—set up a broadband connection on your computer, enter your account and password, and click "Connect" to access the internet—this process is officially called PPPoE dial-up. Later, with more phones, tablets, and smart devices at home, you couldn't dial every phone, so the router took over the task: enter your broadband account password into the router, it shakes hands with the carrier, and the device connects to the router's WiFi to go directly online—no one needs to click again.
so, "Router Settings Auto-Dial" in plain words means: enter your broadband account password into the router, then let it turn on and automatically dial when you disconnect. This only needs to be set once; unless the router is restored to the factory, you won't need to touch it again for life.
four steps to set up automatic dialing
Step one: Connect your computer or phone to the router and open the browser in the background. Addresses vary by brand: most use 192.168.1.1, Xiaomi uses 192.168.31.1, Mercury Tengda uses 192.168.0.1 or melogin.cn. If you're unsure, just check the sticker on the back of the router.
the second step, find the internet settings and select either "broadband dial-up" or "PPPoE"—meaning PPPoE is the official name of the protocol. There are usually three options here: Automatic IP Acquisition (DHCP), Broadband Dial-up (PPPoE), and Static IP. Home broadband is 99% of the second type, and it's the one you usually need to enter your account and password.
Step 3: Fill in your broadband account and password. This account is provided by the operator when applying for broadband, formatted like kh12345@163.gd. If you forget, call the carrier's customer service to report the owner's name to check. There are three classic pitfalls when filling it out: lowercase L and the number 1, the letter O and the number 0 are hard to tell; Passwords are case-sensitive; Don't type an extra space at the end. here's the key point. Below the dial-up account set on the WAN port, there is a line called "Connection Mode," which generally has three options: automatic connection, on-demand connection, and manual connection. Many old tutorials teach you to "choose on-demand connections, automatically disconnect after 15 minutes of idle time to save on network fees"—a legacy of hourly dial-up days. Nowadays, all home broadband is monthly with no time limit; copying it directly is setting yourself in trouble.

I fell into this trap for a lifetime: a second-hand router I helped a relative take over, and the previous owner somehow copied a tutorial, setting it to connect on demand and disconnect after 5 minutes of idleness. The symptoms are especially puzzling—browsing the web normally, but idle games freeze every few minutes, watching live streams occasionally spinning, light during the day and heavy at night. At first, I thought it was channel interference and that switching channels was useless; I suspected there were too many devices, so after cleaning, it was still the same as before. After a whole week of fiddling around, I finally found the root cause when I checked WAN port settings: low data during AFK gaming, the router detected "no one is online," so they hung up dialing, and when game data cut off, the phone redialed again—those few seconds of lag were part of the redialing process.

automatic reddial is free, but it can't cure the root cause
select auto connection and disconnection and redial functions, which are free and require no extra setup. If the line shakes, the router will call back within seconds, and most of the time, you won't even notice.
but one boundary must be drawn: an occasional redial is a normal line fluctuation. Redialing more than ten times a day is beyond what "reddialing" can fix; the root cause must be traced. My order is to first check the optical modem—LOS red light flashing, or if the received optical power in the management page is below -27dBm, that's the fiber line. Then check the router logs again to see if there is a pattern in the timing of each disconnection. Frequent disconnections at midnight are mostly due to regional maintenance. there's another type of fake disconnection to distinguish: if the phone's WiFi icon is still there, it's just web spinning. Test other devices first. Only one device is lost due to the connection between the phone and the router. Only when the whole house fails should you check the dialing and line direction. Don't immediately adjust dial-up settings.
Who is dialing? Clarify: Is it optical modem dialing or router dialing
setting up automatic dialing has a prerequisite—your home is indeed dialing through the router. Now, carriers set the optical modem to router mode by default, dialing the modem, plugging in the router cable, and selecting "Automatic IP Acquisition" for internet access to use. If you follow the tutorial and forcibly enter a broadband account in the router and select PPPoE, two devices will compete to dial the same number. At best, you can't dial it; at worst, both sides kick each other and the whole house is disconnected. A broadband account can only dial once at the same time—this is an ironclad rule. If you check the IP starting with 100.64 or 192.168 on the router's WAN port, it means there's another layer of devices dialing up ahead—your home is using the optical modem for dialing. Second, check the optical modem backend (the sticker on the back shows the address, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1). In the WAN connection list, there is an INTERNET record with the status 'Connected,' indicating it is dialing.
